Shubman Gill was dismissed on 147 on the second day of the first Test of the five-match series between India and England at Headingley in Leeds on Saturday. The 25-year-old, playing his first match as captain of the Indian men’s cricket team, had etched his name in the history books by smashing a hundred, his first one outside of India. Gill, when he raised his Test century on captaincy debut in 140 balls, joined the likes of Virat Kohli, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Vijay Hazare, who had all scored a hundred in their first match as India captain. It wasn’t a special delivery, just flighted, landing about halfway down the pitch outside off. Gill advanced down the track, aiming for a big shot on the leg side. However, he was not to the pitch of the ball and ended up swinging early. There was only one fielder on the leg side, positioned at deep square leg, and Gill was targeting deep mid-wicket. As he did not get to the pitch of the ball, he hit it much squarer and found Josh Tongue perfectly near the square leg boundary. Tongue didn’t have to move an inch.
