Sir Nick Faldo names surprise candidate for final Ryder Cup wildcard place

Harry Hall is a candidate for a Ryder Cup wildcard, Sir Nick Faldo has claimed. The European team’s six automatic places will be finalised after the Betfred British Masters which starts at the Belfry on Thursday. Only Dane Rasmus Højgaard can force his way into the team by overtaking sixth-placed Shane Lowry. It is possible that the European team will look exactly the same as 2023 with only Hojgaard replacing his twin brother Nicolai from Rome. But Hall, 28, is a dark horse candidate after the world No.54 qualified for the Tour Championships in Atlanta starting on Thursday. And the Cornwallian tops the PGA stats for putting average (1.679) and putts per round (27.46) - and is joint top for birdie average (4.54 per round) along with world No.1 Scottie Scheffler . Donald attended a Q&A session with former captains Faldo, Ian Woosnam and Sam Torrance at the former Ryder Cup venue on Tuesday night. And tournament host Faldo said: “He gave me three names and the one obvious name was Harry Hall. Harry is playing really well and is the No.1 putter in the world right now. If you want to pop one in from 15 feet when you need one, he is the man. Sometimes a rookie has to be thrown into the deep end and do it. I think Luke has got three names - and I am not going to say the other ones - but that was my take from when we were chatting.” Donald said: “Harry is someone I am definitely keeping an eye on. He has been very consistent and he is a great putter. There are some sort of similarities between me and Harry. I am happy to see him doing so well.” Hall, who wears a trademark white flat cap, said last week that he had not been measured for a Ryder Cup suit and had not spoken to Donald recently. But the European skipper claimed: “I've had many, many conversations with Harry, starting from the end of last year. I texted with him and called him as recently as last week. He knows exactly where he stands. I think his answer got misconstrued.” Lowry will take a wildcard pick if he is knocked out of the top six by Rasmus Højgaard but Donald insisted: “I never like to promise players anything.” The European skipper mentioned Marco Penge, who beat Hojgaard in Denmark last week, as a potential candidate but played down Sergio Garcia’s chances. The 2022 US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is planning to play five consecutive weeks - including at the Omega European Masters next week - press his claim. “I feel like I've put my case forward with a great summer,” said the Yorkshireman. Matt Wallace will also tee up here and in Switzerland. “A win doesn’t get me automatic selection but good golf over these next two weeks will give me a really good chance,” said the world No.84. “And I still believe there is a good chance for myself. Until I stop playing this game, I will always be trying to get into the Ryder Cup team."
