Olympic champion Kaylee McKeown could match her 50m backstroke world title with gold in the same event in LA after it was one of six new events added to the swimming schedule for the 2028 Games.
McKeown won the 100m-200m backstroke double at the last two Olympics and could make it hattrick in LA having completed the backstroke treble at the 2023 world championships where the 50m dash is raced.
A proposal from World Aquatics has been ratified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to add 50 metre races for backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke added to the program.
The Australian swimmers won 19 medals at the Paris Olympics and there will now be 41 gold medals up for grabs in swimming in LA with the six new events being:
- Men 50m Backstroke, Women 50m Backstroke, Men 50m Breaststroke, Women 50m Breaststroke, Men 50m Butterfly, Women 50m Butterfly
“Today’s decision is a testament to the continued evolution of swimming at the Olympic Games,” World Aquatics President Husain Al Musallam said.
“Including these six new events enhances the program’s balance and adds more opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills on the world’s biggest stage.”
“We thank the IOC for their support in expanding Olympic swimming and can’t wait to watch these incredible athletes compete under the Southern California sky and stars in SoFi Stadium.”
Australia has two other 50m world champions in backstroker Isaac Cooper and backstroker Sam Williamson who both won their titles in Doha in 2024.
The additions to the swimming program will almost certainly flow through to Brisbane in 2032 offering the chance for a record-setting haul of Australian gold at home. .
