Sky Sports commentator opens up on condition that left him in tears - 'This could be the end'

A battle with dartitis has left former world champion and Sky Sports commentator Mark Webster anxious about returning to the oche. Webster was once one of the best in the world , but walked away from the sport before the age of 40 to move into broadcasting. The Welshman's world title came in 2008 in the BDO championships. After making the switch to PDC, he twice reached the semis of their world championships - losing to eventual champions Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis in successive years. Later in Webster's career, though, dartitis struck. The psychological condition, which has more recently affected the likes of Nathan Aspinall , is similar to the 'yips' in cricket . He felt the effects particularly keenly in 2017, when he took on Daryl Gurney at Minehead. Webster admitted to being in tears during the match, which came during a prticularly challenging time, indicating it was the beginning of the end for his career. Since walking away from the sport, 'Webby' has moved into commentary - working on Sky Sports' coverage of Premier League Darts among other competitions. And, reflecting on the end of his career, he has shed some light on just how tough things got for him. “I’m really anxious playing darts now," Webster told the Tops and Tales podcast (via The Sun). "So for example, if you wanted me to come to your local club and play in some players, I’m just not interested. I don’t want that sort of appearance anymore. “I’ve probably fallen out of love with playing the game now, which is a shame. But it’s because of the dartitis, it lingered for ages. It brought me to tears after games because I thought, ‘This could be the end.’” He also reflected on the support he has received from others within the sport. “Michael van Gerwen came up to me and said, ‘I feel sorry for you, mate,’ because I was all over the place," he added. “I was stumbling. I was panicking in games. People were watching me fall apart.” Webster last featured at the PDC World Championship in 2018. After failing to qualify for the next two editions, he took a break from the sport which has turned into a fully-fledged broadcasting career. He has recently been on presenting duties for Sky Sports' Premier League Darts coverage, where reigning champion Luke Littler is aiming to go back-to-back. Littler lost the weekly final to Gerwyn Price last time out in Nottingham, and the pair could meet in the semis in Cardiff on Thursday. Price recognises there's added pressure from the home crowd , especially after the Welsh rugby union team's Six Nations struggles. "I want to go out and perform for a Welsh crowd and give them something they can cheer - they didn’t have much to cheer last weekend,” he said.
