Small town of Union shaken by rumors, media attention in wake of paddleboarder’s killing

UNION — Allen Hill of Rockland has stayed at Mic Mac Cove Family Campground in Union every summer for nine years.
“The most trouble we’d ever have is someone stealing someone else’s fishing gear,” Hill said Sunday.
But he said that fellow campers were shaken by the recent killing that has brought widespread attention to the campground.
“People packed up and went home,” said Hill, sitting in the golf cart he rode from his campsite to Mic Mac Market, a gas station, convenience store and lunch spot less than a mile from the campground.
On Thursday, Maine State Police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old in connection with the killing of Sunshine Stewart, 48. At the same time, the agency also released Stewart’s cause of death: strangulation and blunt force trauma.
The arrest came about two weeks after state police had identified Stewart on July 5 as the victim of a homicide — though police said little else about their investigation.
Days earlier, Stewart had been reported missing while paddleboarding on Crawford Pond, which borders Mic Mac Cove Family Campground. Her body was found on the north side of the pond hours after a search was launched from the campground.
Stewart, who lived less than an hour away in Tenants Harbor, had arrived at the campground days earlier. She was remembered as a kindhearted yet tough outdoorswoman who was a “jack of all trades.”
The teen, charged with intentional or knowing or depraved indifference murder, entered a denial to the charge Friday during a brief appearance in court in Rockland, the Midcoast Villager reported. He was being held at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, state police said.
For now, the Press Herald and Morning Sentinel are not identifying the teen because of his age, pending the court’s ruling on whether he is charged as an adult.
The killing has grabbed headlines, both locally and nationally, since Stewart’s body was found.
A man who identified himself as the campground owner’s son said Sunday that nobody from the campground was available for an interview. He said they want to give campers the most “normal” experience possible, despite the unusual circumstances.
The campground, which sits on the north shore of Crawford Pond, about a quarter-mile down a well-maintained gravel driveway off Route 17, offers family camping and waterfront access, according to its website. A map of the campground shows five cabins, 88 sites — most of which fit campers, rather than tents — showers, a boat dock and a beach.
Angelica Urquhart, who was visiting Hill from Bangor and caught a ride in his golf cart to the gas station, said that people are constantly talking about the crime both within the campground and back in Bangor. Everyone has an idea about who knows what, she said.
“The rumors are really spreading everywhere,” said Urquhart.
Elsewhere in the town of about 2,400 people perhaps best known for its annual fair and blueberry festival, there is no doubt the killing and the recent arrest have drawn an unusual amount of attention.
Samantha Christensen, 19, of Warren, who was working at Common House of Pizza on Sunday, described those who live in Union as “normal people” and mostly blue-collar.
Christensen said she has not heard much talk around town about the killing, except for on social media and in the news media, but said there has been a large police presence in recent weeks. As she spoke, a Knox County sheriff’s deputy sat in a cruiser outside in the parking area nearby, though Christensen said that was normal.
“I haven’t seen much,” she said. “Just a lot of officers.”
Nearby, at the Common Market, a small grocery store, employee Eric Cooper said television news crews have been outside often and customers have been talking and exchanging information and opinions. Those staying at the Mic Mac Cove Family Campground come into the store frequently, Cooper said.
Cooper, 35, said he’s heard rumors both about the search for Stewart and the suspect.
“We hear a lot of things, though, because this is a centerpoint for Union, really,” Cooper said in an interview at the store. “You know, a lot of people come in here. We chit chat. Being a cashier, we do hear a lot of things. And so, do I think it’s reliable? Yeah, I kind of do, in a way.”
Before police arrested the teen, many people were nervous, Cooper said. A 16-year-old girl who works at the market was afraid to take out the trash alone, he said.
Cooper also said people now have been talking about the teen accused of murdering Stewart. Those who believe he is guilty have commented that they feel bad for him because he seemingly ruined his life.
On the other hand, Cooper said, if the teen is innocent, his reputation could be ruined.
“You know what I mean?” Cooper said. “If he didn’t do it, his name will be smeared.”
