Snowboarding on Memorial Day Weekend: Boyne Mountain resurrects ‘glacier’ ski hill as narrow run

BOYNE FALLS, MI - It started as a snow lover’s fever dream: Build up the Victor ski run at Boyne Mountain into a deep, snow-packed “glacier” that would last all winter and spring - and right through Memorial Day.
Now it looks like the resort’s eyebrow-raising plan is coming true. While Victor closed to downhill skiers last weekend, a ribbon of snow has been carefully groomed and shaped, resurrecting it for hike-in snowboarding this Saturday.
It means boarders will get the unheard-of chance to show off their skills at a Lower Peninsula ski resort on the holiday weekend meant to kick off summer.
“What started as a wild idea to build the Victor Glacier turned into Boyne Mountain outlasting every resort east of the Mississippi,” said Kari Roder, Boyne Mountain’s director of marketing. “Turns out when you pile snow 280 inches deep, people get pretty excited about skiing in shorts while their neighbors are launching boats.”
Boyne’s snow farmers began hatching a plan to create a glacier on Victor - the run behind the resort’s Clock Tower Lodge - before the ski season even started last November.
The team capitalized on its new snow-gun equipment to extend the season on Victor. When an old-school winter delighted everyone, the snow crew really started piling up the snowpack. And they started thinking, “What if?”
When Boyne ended its skiing after last weekend, the resort capped its longest-ever ski season.
Earlier this week, ski and board enthusiasts noticed Victor’s remaining snow was being groomed and teased into a long ribbon. The buzz on social media was immediate.
Then Boyne came out with confirmation: “Like a phoenix from the ashes, Victor RISES,” staff posted online. “Surprise Hike Park with 4-6 reborn features this weekend. Saturday from 9am-3pm. Sleep in and weep.”
The “hike park” means boarders will need to hoof it uphill, then board down.
Roder said the longer Victor lasted, the more incredulous people became. Especially as it became clear that ski and snowboard season were overlapping with summer activities like golf and boating at the resort.
“The best part? Watching skeptics transform into believers as our snowpack grew to ridiculous heights. Nothing beats the thrill of offering guests the chance to hit the slopes, play 18 holes, and take a boat ride - all in the same day.’
“That’s just how we roll at Boyne Mountain.”
