Big Zuu’s magnificent winning goal helped World XI overcome England with a jam-packed Old Trafford crowd watching the Soccer Aid game on Sunday. The 14th edition of the annual charity game played between England and a World XI comprising a mix of celebrities and former football stars raised a massive £15m for the children’s charity UNICEF.
The World XI defeated the Englishmen 5-4 after Big Zuu struck the winner. They were down 0-3 at the close of the first half before a stellar turnaround saw Carlos Tevez, the former Manchester United and Manchester City striker, hitting four goals and inspiring the World XI to victory with help from Big Zuu towards the end.
England’s four goals came from all former internationals. Ex-Tottenham player Jermain Defoe hit a double for the English side while former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney and Manchester City’s Toni Duggan scored a goal each to take their side to a 2-0 lead earlier on.
The huge crowd witnessed multiple celebrities in action for the charity relief contest. Former One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson, YouTuber Angry Ginge, The Last Of Us star Bella Ramsey, Diamond from Gladiator, Olympic gold medallist Sir Mo Farah and comedian Richard Gadd attracted loud cheers. Pop star Tomlinson was received wonderfully by the fans whenever he touched the ball but the biggest plaudits were reserved for Angry Ginge.
Ginge was also the player of the match after his impressive defensive show featuring a goal-saving move against Brazil legend Rivaldo. The World XI defender was part of a joke on social media where fans wondered if Ginge could join Manchester United following their disappointing Premier League season.
Notably, Big Zuu, who hit the winning goal, was conducting duties as a pundit for the charity game until half time and predicted that he would score when steps on the field. The rapper and TV personality struck with only five minutes remaining in the contest after beating comedian and presenter Paddy McGuinness, who played as a goalkeeper. Big Zuu then hit the iconic ‘siuuu’ celebration.
“I don’t care if it’s Paddy, I don’t care if it’s David James, I don’t care if it’s Joe Hart. No likey, no lighty,” the popular figure said after the game while speaking with presenter Alex Scott.
