'Some Rules Also Apply': Zaheer Khan Calls For Structure In Gautam Gambhir's Newfound 'Flexible Approach'

The former Indian pacer, Zaheer has suggested that India’s senior men’s team’s ‘excessive flexible approach’ could give rise to insecurity. He called for the application of some rules and communication to ensure that the process is streamlined and the team functions smoothly. The Indian fast-bowling great acknowledged that there was a need for flexibility but he also called for some structure within the batting unit to ensure that the squad remains stable going forward. “You’ve said that you’ve got to have flexibility. Numbers one and two will be there, but the others are going to be flexible. Within that flexibility, some rules also apply,” Zaheer said on Cricbuzz. “There are certain protocols you have to follow. Certain communication needs to happen, which is going to streamline things. Otherwise, you are creating insecurity, which at some stage will come back and hurt you,” he added. Khan felt that having a structure in place would ensure that the team runs smoothly and also evolves to meet the demands of modern-day cricket. “That’s why I said recency bias is very strong right now. The situation has become dynamic if you compare Rahul Dravid’s approach and Gautam Gambhir’s approach. You can say it’s good, bad, or ugly—or you can say, how do we adapt? Each individual, whether it’s the senior management, the think tank, players, or selectors, will have to gauge it and streamline the system for the wheel to turn properly,” he shared. Gambhir and co will face their next big test when the team flies out to Dubai for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. The Head Coach has had mixed opinions regarding his stint with the Men in Blue. While the T20I side has been improved, the same cannot be said for the ODI and Test sides. The team have their fair share of concerns. The biggest is whether India will have Jasprit Bumrah to count on in the tournament. Should he not be cleared to compete, it will be a big blow to India’s bowling unit and it remains to be seen if his replacement can fill the void. The upcoming ICC event will be key in how Gambhir’s stint will be remembered. But for now, the Indian team will have their focus on the third and final ODI against England in Ahmedabad where the side will eye a series-sweeping victory.
