Son Heung-min Announces Departure from Tottenham; Here's His Career Highlights

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The captain of Tottenham Hotspur, Son Heung-min, has announced his departure from the North London club this summer after spending a successful ten seasons. This news was confirmed directly by Son during a press conference ahead of a friendly match between Spurs and Newcastle United in Seoul, South Korea, on Sunday, August 3, 2025."Before we start the press conference, I wanted to say I have decided to leave the Club this summer," said Son, as quoted from the official Premier League website on Saturday, August 2, 2025."I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change—10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age. I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man," added Son.The head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, Thomas Frank, also paid tribute to Son. "He is a true Spurs legend in every aspect, one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League. It is never easy to find the perfect timing and me coming in from the side, it makes it a bit easier to end on a high," said Thomas.Son Heung-min ProfileAs reported by Soccer Souls, Son Heung-min was born on July 8, 1992 in Chuncheon, South Korea, to parents Woong-jung Son and Eun Ja Kil. His father was a former professional footballer who later became Son's manager. Son's football talent was honed from a young age, and he pursued a football education at the FC Seoul academy before joining Hamburger SV in Germany at the age of 16.His professional career began with Hamburger SV in the 2010/2011 season. He became the club's youngest goal scorer in the Bundesliga at that time. His impressive performance led Bayer Leverkusen to recruit him in 2013. During his two seasons at Leverkusen, he scored a total of 29 goals in 87 appearances and led the club to qualify for the Champions League twice in a row.Tottenham Hotspur then officially signed Son for a transfer fee of around 22 million pounds sterling in August 2015, making him the most expensive Asian player at that time. He made his debut in the Premier League on September 13, 2015 against Sunderland, and scored his first goal a week later against Crystal Palace.Outstanding Achievements at TottenhamDuring a decade donning the Tottenham Hotspur uniform, Son made 454 appearances in all championships and scored 173 goals. He closed the 2024/2025 season with a sweet achievement, lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy, Spurs' first major title in the last 17 years, after defeating Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao last May.He also set various club records, including being the fifth highest goal scorer of all time for Spurs, the club's all-time leading assist maker in the Premier League with 71 assists, and the second highest appearance maker in the Premier League for Spurs, with 333 appearances, second only to Hugo Lloris.Son Heung-min also registered 20 or more goal contributions in nine consecutive seasons and won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2021/2022 season. At the international level, Son has appeared in three World Cups and scored 51 goals in 134 caps for South Korea.
