Son of an autorickshaw driver Kerala's Vignesh Puthur is an instant hit in IPL

Dubai: Coming from humble beginnings can make a person grow up strong, ambitious and a desire to excel.Not many had heard of Vignesh Puthur who made a dream debut for Mumbai Indians' against Chennai Super Kings at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.He claimed the important wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda. Though Mumbai failed to win, the youngster's spell grabbed many a eyeballs.. They 24-year-old left-arm wrist spinner Vignesh Puthur earned the spotlight when he joined as an impact substitute for Mumbai Indians. Coming in for India captain Rohit Sharma, Puthur made his IPL debut even before playing senior representative cricket for his state as the five-time champions plucked him from nowhere to put him on the national stage, in front of millions of fans claiming three wickets in his four-over spell.The youngster from Mallapuram in Kerala is the son of Sunil Kumar who is an autorickshaw driver. His mother K.P Bindu is a homemaker. Despite facing severe financial constraints, Puthur saw through the odds with great determination and moved from Malappuram to Thrissur chasing his dreams. . Initially a medium pacer till college-level cricket, Puthur shifted to spin late in his development but found success soon. He gained prominence while playing for St Thomas College in Thrissur, where he pursued a Master of Arts in Literature. His performances for the Alleppey Ripples in the inaugural edition of the Kerala Cricket League brought Puthur, who also played in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, into the spotlight.It was during his stint in the Kerala Premier League that Puthur was noticed by Mumbai Indians' talent scouts. He was bought by MI in the IPL auction 2025 for Rs3 million.To aid his development as a bowler, Mumbai Indians had earlier this year sent Puthur to South Africa for the third season of SA20, where he served as a net bowler for MI Cape Town and had the opportunity to train with Rashid Khan, one of the finest wrist-spinners in T20 cricket.
