Sports are experiencing a robust resurgence in Saint Lucia, prompting authorities to take decisive action to upgrade facilities across the island to meet the developmental needs of the nation’s athletes effectively. Sports Minister Kenson Casimir confidently showcases Saint Lucia’s impressive accomplishments in both global and regional sports in recent years, culminating in Julien “Juju” Alfred’s extraordinary success as an Olympic Gold and Silver medalist at last year’s Paris Olympics. On the local front, sports authorities proudly announce the successful initiation of Saint Lucia’s Semi-Professional League (SPLFL) into its second season, alongside the induction of the SPLT20 contest into a semi-professional league. The establishment of the High-Performance Centre (HPC) serves as a vital training ground for young cricketers, while the established Saint Lucia Sports Academy is dedicated to cultivating elite young athletes. Numerous initiatives are being implemented to enhance the standards of sports on the island. Minister Casimir emphasizes that the MPP has been fully upgraded with lighting. “We have significant work ahead to upgrade all our facilities. Last year, we used three venues to host the SPFL, and within a single year, we will now utilize 10 facilities for semi-professional football in Saint Lucia,” he asserted during a recent media briefing. The minister affirmed the government’s strong commitment to investing in the renovation of several sports facilities across the island. He highlighted the Gros Islet Mini Stadium as one of the venues for SPFL matches this year, with major renovations also completed at the MPP and Canaries playing field over the past 12 months. Other upgraded venues include the Mabouya playing field, La Resource playing field, Dennery playing field, and the Phillip Marcellin Grounds (PMG) in Vieux Fort. Further renovations are planned for the Cross Over playing field in Laborie and the Saab Playing Facility at Vigie. Work is set to commence by mid-July on the La Clery playing field as an additional venue for hosting SPFL matches and enhancing sports development beyond 6:00 p.m., as stated by the sports minister. Regarding the broader promotion and appeal of sports in the nation, Minister Casimir firmly stated, “Saint Lucia is the envy of the region and beyond for its commitment to sports development.” He added, “Saint Lucia is the fastest-developing sports nation in the Caribbean. No other country in the region has seen advancements in sports from administration to facilities to grassroots programs in the past three years as we have in Saint Lucia.” The minister confirmed upcoming plans to upgrade the Bexon playing field, emphasizing that a thorough survey and assessment of the facility is ongoing, given its location in a flood-prone area. The Ministry of Infrastructure will conduct a “Geo-analysis” of the area to determine the necessary cost factors for a complete overhaul of the structure.
