@Source: mlive.com
BAY CITY, MI -- Each week through the 2025 high school spring sports season, we spotlight athletes from baseball, softball, girls soccer, boys lacrosse, boys golf, girls tennis and boys and girls track and field with our MLive Bay City Athlete of the Week project. We recognize athletes for a job well done and give readers a chance to decide the weekly honor. Cast your vote as often as you’d like until the poll closes at 12:01 a.m. Friday, May 9. SAM BRIGGS, STANDISH-STERLING Whether he’s on the hill or at the plate, Briggs is a must-see performer for the Standish-Sterling baseball team. The third-year varsity standout gets the job done in eye-popping fashion. “Sam is a unique talent who can put the barrel on a baseball as well as anyone who I have coached,” coach Ryan Raymond said. The SVSU signee went 9-for-13 last week with six RBIs in four games. He also racked up 10 strikeouts in six innings of pitching, allowing one earned run to help the No. 4-ranked Panthers remain unbeaten. DRUE BUSCH, JOHN GLENN It was perhaps the most memorable game of the season for the John Glenn softball team, and Busch was right at the heart of it. The sophomore catcher completed an eight-run comeback with an RBI triple for a 16-15 win over Alma. “Like her teammates during the rally, Drue came through in the clutch,” coach John Busch said. “She put in a lot of work in the offseason and it is paying off.” Busch also slammed her first varsity home run in the contest. She went 14-for-21 with six extra-base hits for the week and also notched one win as a pitcher. ANGELICA CORLEW, GLADWIN She may be just a sophomore, but Corlew is already the tone-setter for the Gladwin softball team. Whether batting, playing shortstop or pitching, she has a knack for coming through in the clutch. “She leads us on the field by making outstanding plays and making the routine plays as well,” coach Bryanna Gary said. “When she is up to bat, we know she will do something that contributes to helping us win.” She sparked the Flying G’s to the Coleman Invitational title, cranking out nine hits in three games then coming on as a relief pitcher to close out the championship game in extra innings. OLIVIA DELMOTTE, LAKER Delmotte has a nose for the goal for the Laker girls soccer team. And sometimes her goals come in bunches. The sophomore caught fire last week, scoring six goals and adding three assists for her 8-1-1 squad. “She has great footwork and can score from multiple areas on the field,” coach Rebecca Krohn said. “Olivia is very quick and skilled as a ball handler.” As skilled as she is offensively, Delmotte also has a defensive mentality and can be shifted to the back line as needed. She’s a pivotal part of Laker’s chase for the Big Thumb Conference White title. LANDEN ENCISO, PINCONNING The prior two seasons, Enciso stood as a fixture at second base for the Pinconning baseball team. But he could be anywhere on the field as a senior. “He has expanded into a do-it-all performer for us,” coach Casey Pashak said. “He has played third, short, second, pitched and caught -- and excelled at all.” Enciso’s other pivotal role is at the top of the lineup, where he is a table-setting leadoff hitter. He leads the Spartans in hits, doubles and triples and is second with 16 RBIs. ALYSA FRITZ, CASS CITY The veteran ace of the Cass City softball team has been on point for the Red Hawks. The senior pitcher is a driving force in her team’s rise to a No. 7 state ranking. “Alysa has been a reliable and crafty pitcher in the circle for the Red Hawks during her three-year varsity career,” coach Nathan Fritz said. She delivered in dominating fashion last week, firing a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts against No. 6 Millington while helping her own cause with a home run. SOPHIA JEZIERSKI, ESSEXVILLE GARBER The Garber girls soccer team features a freshman of great promise in Jezierski. In her debut season, she has emerged as a vital role player for the No. 4-ranked Dukes. “Sophia has done a great job coming off the bench to primarily play defense for the team,” coach Brent Betzold said. “She is very hard-working, very coachable, and is making good progress learning to play at the high school level.” Jezierski delivered a memorable moment in the Stadium Game, scoring a key goal in Garber’s 4-3 win over Bay City Central. MADELYN OLSON, ALL SAINTS She may be a relative newcomer to the game, but Olson is already making her presence felt with the Bay City All Saints softball team. The sophomore just picked up the game last season and has stepped right in as a solid second baseman. “Her biggest asset is that she brings an energy, enthusiasm and laughter to both games and practices that the rest of our team feeds off,” coach Jason Proctor said. “She picks us up when we need it and stokes the fire when we’re rolling.” Olson showed her proficiency with the bat in a big situation, getting down an squeeze bunt to score a huge run in a one-run game with Kingston. PAULINO PEREZ, BAY CITY CENTRAL The Bay City Central baseball team has an ideal table-setter at the top of the lineup in Perez, who has a knack for working his way on base. The sophomore catcher is not only batting .410 on the season but has drawn 17 walks. “He’s a kid who constantly worked on his catching technique this offseason,” coach Brady Neitzel said. “He’s patient at the plate but also knows when to attack right away.” Perez has delivered his share of defensive highlights, throwing out 14 baserunners from behind the plate. BRAYDEN SIMMON, BAY CITY WESTERN The No. 1-ranked Bay City Western baseball team has weapons all over the field, and Simmon is among the primary ones. A strong hitter who plays first base and outfield, he has set himself apart with his pitching as a senior. “Brayden has been lights out in his last couple outings,” coach Tim McDonald said. “He could be an ace on many pitching staffs, and he’s been huge for us when we’ve needed him.” The southpaw went eight innings for a two-hit, 11-strikeout gem in a 2-1 win over state-ranked Flint Powers then came back with a two-hit shutout over Lapeer. He is signed with SVSU for next season. LAYLA ST. PETER, PINCONNING As a center-midfielder, St. Peter is often directing traffic for the Pinconning girls soccer team. But she also has a knack for knowing when to take the wheel. The senior went on the attack at the perfect time, scoring the game-winning goal against Unionville-Sebewaing to give the Spartans their first victory. “She has a great ability to see the field, which allows her to make plays that will set other players up for goals,” coach Kaylee Meissner said. She followed up her big goal with an assist in a 2-0 win over Beaverton. She has two goals on the season.
