Spring sports stars: Who are the Jackson area’s top juniors?

Last week we asked you who you felt was the top performer in the senior class in the Jackson area. While the Class of ’25 is out there capping off its high school athletics career, the Class of ’26 is pulling off some pretty impressive things as well. Here are some of the top Jackson-area athletes in the junior class in spring sports. Cast a vote for your pick for the best of the best. If you cannot see the poll, click here. Wyatt Vowell, Columbia Central track Vowell has been a strong part of a 4x800 relay which is unbeaten in three starts with him in the lineup, as well as a 4x400 relay which has picked up a pair of wins. He also had an 800 win in a triangular with Addison and Homer, and took fifth in the 400 at the Bulldog Invitational at Mason. Henry Bradford, Leslie baseball Bradford has become a reliable bat in the Blackhawks batting order, with three RBIs in a recent win over New Lothrop and earlier in the week eight hits in a doubleheader sweep of Addison. Grant Johnson, Manchester track Johnson had dominated the boys hurdles races, with five wins in six starts in the 110 hurdles, including putting up a 15.63 at the Napoleon Invitational, and five wins in six starts in the 300 hurdles, sweeping the relays at the Blackhawk Invitational on Friday, where he also won the 200. Rayah Hitt, Western soccer Hitt had a pair of goals in the Panthers’ win over Marshall last week, another in a win over Pennfield, and two assists in a win over Leslie, offering up a strong attack with the versatility to play midfield or forward. Andrew Norman, Napoleon track Norman has won the pole vault four times in five meets with a personal best of 13’3 at Hinsdale last week. Kilah Boatright, East Jackson softball Boatright is hitting .348 with an .870 slugging percentage and 12 RBIs. Leland Lindemeyer, Northwest track Lindemeyer is having a strong year in several events, with his role in the Mounties’ strong 4x100 and 4x200 relays, and in the long jump where he most recently took third at the Charlie Janke Invitational at Jackson, flying 20’3.25. Cieara Barrett, Concord track Barrett has run the 800 twice this year, winning both, has a 400 win, was part of winning 4x200 and 4x400 relays at the Ralph Crume Invitational, and has a 14’5 in the long jump. Conor Rentfrow, Columbia Central baseball Rentfrow has worked 21 innings and won all three of his decisions this year with a 0.67 ERA and a 0.905 WHIP. He is also hitting .375. Madison Tracy, Homer track Tracy has never finished lower than third in five meets in the 100 and never finished lower than second in the 200. She also has a 400 win at a dual meet with Hanover-Horton in which she ran a 1:03.51, and has been part of strong 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Codi Ruge, Lumen Christi softball/soccer Ruge is coming off a strong season in both sports and looking to add to that legacy this year. On the diamond for the Titans she had a pair of hits in a recent win over Ovid-Elsie, and multi-hit games the week before that in games against University Liggett and Toledo Notre Dame. Edison Lopeman, Western track Lopeman has a pair of wins in the 1600 and two in the 3200, winning both at Mason’s Bulldog Invitational. Devan Herendeen, Jonesville baseball Herendeen had a 1.35 ERA and was named all-Big 8 as a freshman before missing all of last year with an injury. This year he is back and has a 1.12 ERA with an 0.805 WHIP in 18 2/3 innings on the hill. Ashleigh Simon, Grass Lake track Simon has taken first twice in pole vault, with a jump of 9’6 at Webberville last week. Libby Reese, Lumen Christi tennis Partnering with senior Lexie Thornhill as the Titans’ No. 1 doubles pair, Reese has 13 wins already this year with 10 of those coming in straight sets. Iymonnie Pace, Springport track Pace has won the long jump four times in five meets, with a second-place finish at Leslie on Friday. Her season best so far is 15’4.5. Abbie Hess, Michigan Center soccer One of the top goalkeepers in the area, Hess is already coming off a strong sophomore campaign last year which earned her an all-conference nod. Hailey Creisher, Leslie track So far this year Creisher has three wins and two runner-up finishes in the 800, three wins and three second-place runs in the 1600, a win in the 3200 Friday in her only time running it so far and has been part of four winning 4x800 relays.
