Spring sports stars: Who are the top seniors around Muskegon? Our picks, your votes

MUSKEGON, MI – Each week this spring sports season, we’ve asked readers of MLive to vote for the top athlete who rose to the occasion and posted noteworthy performances for their team. Now, we want to know who the best of the best is from each graduating class, as we attempt to highlight a plethora of worthy student-athletes from across the Muskegon area with our Spring Sports Stars project. We’ve put together a strong list of candidates from the 2025 class thanks to nominations from Muskegon-area coaches but we are counting on the readers of MLive and the Muskegon Chronicle to decide who the top choice is. Readers can vote from now until noon on Monday, April 28, for their top candidate and we’ll publish the winner later that day. The series will continue next week with the area’s top junior spring sports athletes, followed by the top underclassmen the following week. Below are the top nominated senior spring sports athletes from the Muskegon area for the 2025 season, presented in alphabetical order. Haylie Alsip, Grand Haven The softball standout for the Buccaneers is currently hitting .429 from the plate with 18 hits, including two doubles and one triple, with 13 RBI and 15 runs scored. She’s also 5-for-5 on stolen bases attempts. Derrick Ashley, Western Michigan Christian The boys track and field standout for the Warriors has recorded personal-best times in the 200 dash (22.80 seconds) and 400 (57.20) and a season-best mark in the high jump ( 5-8) and also a member of the 800 and 1,600 relay teams. Greta Auch, Montague The softball standout for the Wildcats is currently batting .420 from the plate with three RBI and holds a fielding percentage of .920 from her shortstop position. Izabel Austin, Fremont The softball standout for the Packers is currently batting .500 from the plate with 12 hits, including four doubles, with 10 RBI. Maddie Baden, Fremont The softball standout for the Packers is currently batting .483 from the plate with four doubles and 11 RBI and has .917 fielding percentage at third base. Bayleigh Bays, Whitehall The girls soccer standout for the Vikings plays a pivotal role from her sweeper position and helps anchor a defensive core that has only allowed six goals in five games this season. Jaxon Bean, North Muskegon The baseball standout for the Norsemen is 2-0 as his team’s starting pitcher this spring with an ERA of 2.65 and nine strikeouts through eight innings of action. He is also batting .333 from the plate. Valerie Beeck, Grand Haven The girls track and field standout for the Buccaneers has recorded personal-best times in the 00 run (2:10.95) and 1,600 (4:54.14) and is also the anchor leg of the 1,600 relay (3:59.17) and 3,200 relay (9:44.26) teams. Maddy Billings, Ludington The girls soccer standout for the Orioles has recorded two goals and two assists so far this spring. Aiden Booth, Grant The baseball standout for the Tigers is currently batting .308 from the plate with seven stolen bases this season. Ryan Bosch, Fruitport The baseball standout for the Trojans is batting .867 from the plate with 15 RBI through six games this season. From the mound, the Wake Forest commit is 2-0 as a starter with 15 strikeouts through seven innings. Hayden Boutell, Montague The softball standout for the Wildcats is currently batting .510 from the plate with five RBI and holds a fielding percentage of .950. Tessa Britt, Spring Lake The softball standout for the Lakers is currently batting .400 from the plate with six hits, including three home runs, 12 RBI, six walks and seven runs scored. She belted a school-record 14 home runs last season and is currently one away from tying the school’s all-time home run record. Drew Brooks, Reeths-Puffer The baseball standout for the Rockets is currently 2-0 as his team’s starting pitcher with six strikeouts and an ERA of 0.00. Hannah Brown, Spring Lake The girls track and field standout for the Lakers is currently the school-record holder in the discus with a personal-best throw of 104-6. She’s also posted a season-best throw of 32-2 in the shot put and also competes in the 100 and 200 dash and is a member of the 400 relay team. Jacob Burns, Fremont The boys track and field standout for the Packers broke the school record in the 100-meter dash twice last week, as he recorded a time of 11.51 seconds in a West Michigan Conference tri-meet and added an 11.50 finish at the Fruitport Invitational on Friday. He also added a personal-best time of 23.30 seconds in the 200 dash and is a key member of the 400 and 800 relay teams. Ezra Carefelle, Mona Shores The boys lacrosse standout for the Sailors has registered 20 goals and 25 assists in seven games this season. Lainee Carmean, Mona Shores The girls lacrosse standout for the Sailors has registered 37 goals, nine assists, 31 draw controls, 13 ground balls and caused six turnovers in 10 games this season. Karissa Carlson, Newaygo The softball standout for the Lions is currently batting .500 from the plate with nine hits, including three doubles, and nine RBI. Tyler Carlson, Fruitport The boys golf standout for the Trojans holds a nine-hole stroke average of 41.6 through 45 holes this spring with a personal-best score of 39. Mia Clemence, Fremont The girls soccer standout for the Packers scored 40 goals and added 17 assists last season and currently has 11 goals and six assists in six games so far this spring. The All-State performer broke the school record for goals in a season last spring. Bryan Convertini, Muskegon Catholic Central The baseball standout for the Crusaders is currently batting .474 through the first eight games of the season and is coming off a first team All-State season as a junior last spring. Abbie Critchett, Reeths-Puffer The softball standout for the Rockets is currently batting .421 from the plate with one double and one triple to go along with four RBI and four runs scored. Trevor Cunningham, Mona Shores The baseball standout for the Sailors has registered seven hits and nine RBI so far this season. He is also 1-0 from the mound with a complete game in which he allowed just three hits and struck out nine batters while allowing no earned runs. Devontae Davis, Muskegon The baseball standout for the Big Reds holds a .400 batting average with three stolen bases in three games this season. Brylee Dewitt, Fruitport The softball standout for the Trojans is currently batting .476 from the plate with 10 hits, including three doubles, three RBI, three walks and 11 runs scored. She also has a fielding percentage of .917 while splitting time between catcher, second base and outfield. Kailey Edenburn, Hart The girls soccer standout for the Pirates holds a 79.5 percent completion rate on her pass attempts, while averaging 4.2 tackles and 6.2 interceptions per game from her center back position. Alyse Erickson, Shelby The soccer standout for the Tigers has registered two goals and two assists from her defensive midfielder position so far this season. Piper Eskridge, Manistee The girls soccer standout for the Mariners has recorded 53 saves in six games from her goalkeeper position and helped her squad to a 6-0 start to the 2025 season. Bella Fogus, Whitehall The softball standout for the Vikings batted .462 from the plate last season with two home runs, 43 RBI, 55 runs scored and held a fielding percentage of .938 at first base. Ava Freye, Mona Shores The girls soccer standout for the Sailors scored nine goals and dished out three assists last season and earned all-conference and all-district honors. The explosive midfielder helps dominate possession for her team and helped Mona Shores jump out to a 5-2 record this spring. Addison Gillard, Ravenna The softball standout for the Bulldogs is currently hitting .412 from the plate and holds a 1.90 ERA from the circle through seven games. Rowan Hayenga, Spring Lake The boys volleyball standout for the Lakers has recorded five aces, 13 digs, 29 kills and five blocks in six matches so far this spring. Emma Herremans, Ravenna The softball standout for the Bulldogs is currently hitting .438 from the plate through seven games after hitting .717 last season. Kendall Hibbard, North Muskegon The girls soccer standout for the Norse has stepped up into a leading role as the team’s starting goalkeeper and team captain. She’s helped anchor a North Muskegon defensive group that has pushed the team to a Top 5 ranking in the Division 4 polls. Addi Hovey, Hart The track and field standout for the Pirates won three individual state titles last spring with first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (12.27 seconds), 200 dash (25.60) and high jump (5 feet, 6 inches). She was also a member of the 400 relay team (50.13) that finished third overall to earn All-State honors in four events. Audrey Huizinga, Manistee The girls track standout for the Mariners has recorded personal-best times in the 200 dash (25.80 seconds) and 400 dash (58.82) so far this spring. Jessica Jazwinski The All-American cross country runner will be headed North Carolina State University this fall but will be busy on the track this spring as she puts the finishing touches on a historic prep career. At the WMC Pre-Spring Break Invite earlier this week, Jazwinski recorded personal-best times in the 200 dash (29.21), 400 dash (1:01.18) and the 800 run (2:19.81). Eliana Jennings, Orchard View The softball standout for the Cardinals is batting .500 from the plate with an OPS of 1.300 and has a fielding percentage of 1.000 at second base. Annabel Kevwitch, Whitehall The softball standout for the Vikings batted .460 from the plate last season with three home runs and 45 RBI and 51 runs scored. She also added a .951 fielding percentage from her catcher position. Ella Kinney, Mona Shores The girls soccer standout for the Sailors has dished out a team-high six assists in seven games this season and helped Mona Shores to a 5-2 record so far this spring. Will Korenstra, Grand Haven The boys track and field standout for the Buccaneers recorded a personal-best mark in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches) earlier this spring. Korenstra won an O-K Red Conference title in the high jump last spring with a leap of 5 feet, 11 inches and was also a member of the 400 relay team that set a new school record with a time of 42.16 at the Division 1 state finals. Morgan Lawrence, Western Michigan Christian The girls track and field standout for the Warriors recorded a personal-best time in the 3,200 run (11:54.99) earlier this spring which is third all-time in school history. She’s also added Top 10 all-time finishes in the 300 hurdles, 800 run and 1,600 run and is also qualified for the 2,000 meter steeplechase at Nike Outdoor Nationals in June. Cooper Mallory, North Muskegon The boys golf standout for the Norsemen carded a personal-best 42 to take second overall at the West Michigan Conference event at Moss Ridge last week. Drake Mckay, Mason County Central The baseball standout for the Spartans is currently batting .455 from the plate with two doubles and seven runs scored in five games so far this season. David McMullen, Grand Haven The boys track and field standout for the Buccaneers recorded personal-best times in the 200 dash (22.32) and 400 dash (49.32) this spring as well as a season-best time in the 100 dash (11.01). He’s also the anchor leg of the 400 (41.69), 800 (1:26.92) and 1,600 (3:21.28) relay teams that set new school records in all three events this season. Peyton Merz, Mason County Central The baseball standout for the Spartans is currently batting .455 from the plate with eight runs scored and seven stolen bases so far this season. He’s also registered eight strikeouts in four innings from the mound. Carter Mieler, North Muskegon The baseball standout for the Norsemen is currently batting .524 from the plate with 11 hits, two RBI and nine runs scored and holds a .957 fielding percentage at second base with eight assists and 14 putouts. Brock Morningstar, Whitehall The baseball standout for the Vikings registered a .350 batting average last season with 10 doubles and 28 runs from the plate. He also logged a 2.68 ERA from the mound and struck out 52 hitters. Morningstar has already recorded two RBI and seven walks in 15 at-bats this season and holds a 3.89 ERA with nine strikeouts in nine innings from the mound. Matthias Morse, Western Michigan Christian The boys track and field standout for the Warriors has recorded personal-best times in the 200-meter dash (23.30), 400 (50.86), and 3,200 run (10:03.33) and added a season-best time in the 1,600 (4:39.67). Gabbie Mosher, Orchard View The softball standout for the Cardinals is currently batting .500 from the plate with an OPS of 1.833. She also recorded a shutout win from the pitching circle with six strikeouts and two walks in her only start of the season so far this spring. Lauren Nicles, Spring Lake The girls soccer standout for the Lakers has helped anchor the defensive front for her squad from her defensive back position for the past four seasons and played a pivotal role in Spring Lake’s run to a Division 2 state title last spring. Alexa Obenauf, Grant The softball standout for the Tigers is hitting .409 from the plate with nine hits, including one double, one triple and one home run, 15 RBI and 12 runs scored in seven games. Ana Ovalle, Grant The girls tennis standout for the Tigers has already registered six wins at No. 1 singles this spring after earning all-state honors at No. 1 doubles the last past two seasons. Ovalle has already broken the program record for career wins with 65 total wins in her varsity career. Cade Paugh, Reeths-Puffer The baseball standout for the Rockets is currently batting .429 from the plate with two doubles. Ava Pelton, Montague The girls soccer standout for the Wildcats has registered eight goals and seven assists in seven games so far this season. Amelia Pena, Mona Shores The softball standout for the Sailors is currently batting .406 from the plate with nine runs scored and three stolen bases. She also recorded 36 putouts and five assists with a fielding percentage of 100 from her catcher position. Katie Phillips, Mona Shores The girls soccer standout for the Sailors has registered a team-high six goals in seven games this season and helped Mona Shores to a 5-2 record so far this spring. Lillian Pierce, Holton The girls track and field standout for the Red Devils has posted season-best times in the 100 dash (16.70 seconds) and long jump (12-3) so far this season. Michael Piggee Jr., Muskegon The boys track and field standout for the Big Reds set a new personal-best time in the 100-meter dash (11.31) last week and also took first-place finishes in the 200 (23.46), 110 hurdles (14.80) and was a member of the 400 relay team that took top honors with a time of 44.06. He earned all-state honors in the 100 hurdles last year at the Division 1 state finals with a time of 14.63 seconds. He also won a regional title with a personal-best time of 14.33 and captured an O-K Green Conference title in the event as well. Nora Pollock, Western Michigan Christian The girls soccer standout for the Warriors has registered 12 goals and eight assists in seven games this spring. The Grace University commit scored 34 goals and tallied 14 assists last season on her way to first team all-state honors. Valerie Pollock, Fruitport The girls track and field standout for the Trojans recorded a personal-best time in the 800 run (2:36.50) and season-best times in the 1,600 (5:53.01) and 3,200 (12:43.20) and 3,200 relay (11:25.86). Vincent Pollock, Fruitport The boys track and field standout for the Trojans set a new personal-best mark in the 800 run (2:05.21) last week and holds a season-best time in the 1,600 run (4:49.70). He is also a key member of Fruitport’s 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams. Breslyn Porter, Hart The girls soccer standout for the Pirates has recorded two goals and one assist in six games this season with both goals coming against state-ranked North Muskegon. The center midfielder holds a 77 percentage rate on her passes and averages 2.66 tackles, 3.33 interceptions, and 1.16 aerial duels won per game. Addison Pranger, Montague The girls soccer standout for the Wildcats is 4-1 as her team’s starting goalkeeper with four shutouts this season. Kendra Price, Grand Haven The girls tennis standout for the Buccaneers is currently 8-1 at No. 1 singles this spring after advancing to the Division 1 regional finals last spring and helping her squad qualify for the team state finals. Carter Ramseyer, Hart The boys track and field standout for the Pirates set new personal-best marks in the 400 dash (50.96 seconds) and high jump (5-10). He’s also posted a time of 23.76 in the 200 dash and is also a member of the 800 and 1,600 relay teams. Emma Reelman, Mona Shores The girls lacrosse standout for the Sailors has recorded 21 goals and three assists through 10 games this season. Ethan Reyburn, Newaygo The boys track and field standout for the Lions recorded a personal-best time in the 100 dash (11.77) and a season-best time in the 200 dash (24.42). Bradley Richards, Muskegon Catholic Central The boys track and field standout for the Crusaders finished as the Division 4 state runner-up in the high jump last spring by clearing 6 feet, 6 inches and registered a personal-best mark of 19 feet, 11.75 inches in the long jump as well. Jayden Robinson, White Cloud The boys track and field standout for the Indians has recorded personal-best marks in the high jump (6 feet, 6 inches) and pole vault (8-0) this spring. Robinson qualified for the Division 4 state finals last year in three events (high jump, 400 relay and 800 relay). Brooklyn Russell, Fruitport The softball standout for the Trojans has registered 38 strikeouts and holds a 3.38 ERA with a WHIP of 1.38 in 31 innings pitched so far this spring. She also holds a batting average of .462 with 12 hits, including three doubles and three home runs, 10 RBI, three walks and 12 runs scored. Jennah Skiba, Ludington The girls tennis standout for the Orioles is currently 9-0 at No. 1 singles so far this spring with wins over Grant, Mount Pleasant, Greenville, Cadillac, North Muskegon, Mona Shores, Spring Lake, Fruitport and Whitehall. She was a regional champion last spring and holds a career varsity record of 56-7. Addy Smith, Grand Haven The girls track and field standout for the Buccaneers has recorded a season-best time of 2:18.13 in the 800 run and is also a member of the 1,600 relay (3:59.17) and 3,200 relay (9:44.26) teams. Gavin Smith, Ludington The boys track and field standout for the Orioles has set new personal-best times in the 110 hurdles (15.91) and 300 hurdles (43.37) and added a season-best mark in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. Mady Snyder, Reeths-Puffer The softball standout for the Rockets is currently batting .375 from the plate with four singles, one double and one home run. From the circle, she has also posted 15 strikeouts in 13 innings and has a fielding percentage of 1.000. Kate Somel, Manistee The girls soccer standout for the Mariners has registered 13 goals and two assists in six games this season from her midfielder position. Josalyn Sompolinsky, Muskegon The softball standout for the Big Reds is currently batting .333 from the plate with four walks and five runs scored. She’s also struck out eight batters in 12 innings of action from the pitching circle this spring. Gracie Stamp, Newaygo The softball standout for the Lions is currently batting .579 from the plate with 11 hits, including one double, two triples, two home runs, seven RBI, 12 runs scored and four stolen bases. From the circle, Stamp holds a 0.62 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 22.1 innings pitched. Chase Sullivan, Fruitport The boys golf standout for the Trojans holds a nine-hole stroke average of 40.6 through 45 holes this spring. Cam Thompson, Whitehall The boys track and field standout for the Vikings recorded a new personal-best time in the 110 hurdles (15.16) last week. Last season, Thompson won regional and GMAA city titles in the high jump and started the 2025 season by clearing 6 feet, 4 inches at the GVSU Laker Challenge in March. He also added personal-best marks in the shot put (43-2) and discus (141-2). Emma Thompson, Grant The softball standout for the Tigers is hitting .600 from the plate with nine hits, including one double and one triple, 11 walks and 16 runs scored through seven games. Russell Toth, Newaygo The baseball standout for the Lions is currently batting .438 from the plate with nine RBI through five games. Grace VanderKooi, Western Michigan Christian The girls track and field standout for the Warriors set a new school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.30 earlier this month as well as a personal-best time in the 400 (1:01.21), which is Top 5 in school history. Last spring, VanderKooi earned all-state honors in the 1,600 run (5:16.47) and was a member of the 3,200 relay team that finished state runner-up with a time of 9:36.82 at the Division 4 state meet. She also captured regional championships in the 1,600 run, the 3,200 run (12:15.61), and the 800 run (2:27.46). Jaden Villalpando, North Muskegon The boys track and field standout for the Norsemen has registered season-best marks in the long jump (20 feet, 11.75 inches) and the high jump (5-8) so far this season. Lila Volkers, Kent City The senior standout for the Eagles earned all-state honors in the 3,200 run last spring with a time of 11:01.24 at the state meet and registered a personal-best time of 5:14.76 in the 1,600 run. She was also a member of the 3,200 relay team that earned all-state honors with a time of 10:01.31 at the Division 3 state meet. Ben Warren, Mona Shores The boys lacrosse standout for the Sailors holds a save percentage above 60 this season and is one of the top goalies in the O-K Conference this spring. Olivia Wert, Grand Haven The girls soccer standout for the Buccaneers was an all-conference and all-district player last spring as she helped Grand Haven reach the state semifinals for the first time in school history. The team captain and starting center back has helped the Buccaneers race out to a 3-1-1 record so far this spring. Kylee Willea, Oakridge The senior standout for the Eagles is currently batting .450 from the plate with five singles, three doubles, one home run and 10 RBI. Willea is 3-1 as her team’s starting pitcher with an ERA of 2.10 with 32 strikeouts and only two walks in 26 innings from the circle. Hunter Yearsovich, Newaygo The baseball standout for the Lions is currently batting .647 from the plate with three doubles, 11 runs scored, eight RBI and 12 stolen bases through five games.
