What a start to the postseason.
The first round of the NJSIAA 2025 boys tennis state tournament is nearly in the books, and there were plenty of surprises.

NORTH JERSEY, SECTION 1
Jaden Cohen (6-3, 6-4), TJ Cherubini (6-3, 6-3) and Gunther Deas (6-2, 6-4) swept all three singles positions in Ramsey’s upset over Pequannock. First doubles Greg Stafanelli and Lucian Adler also claimed a 6-4, 7-5 win as well.
The biggest upset so far this post-season is Indian Hills over Kittatinny. Kittatinny was undefeated coming in at 12-0 while Indian Hills was just 2-13 including 0-9 within its division. But this match was no contest as Indian Hills dominated. First singles Arman Ghavami paced Indian Hills with a strong 6-3, 6-0 win.
Paramus went on the road and earned a first round win. Brandon Best and Danuel Hu at second doubles came back to win 5-7, 6-3, (10-5) in a critical match. First singles Conor Smith also downed Ian Yip, 6-4, 6-1, while third singles Luke Bursac won 6-1, 6-2. Yip was a former first singles winner and MVP of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament.
Westwood had a pretty easy time at Sparta Racket Club. Sawyer Donnis, John Pissott and Andrew Chevrier swept High Point at singles, dropping just a total six games combined. Jude Soule and Charles Danhart also secured a strong sin at first doubles, while Ben Terzi and Jacob Badgas won the the only competitve match as well at second doubles.
Nutley won two of the three singles matches, but Fair Lawn showed off its depth with relatively easy wins at doubles. From the first spot, Jaydem Tumbokon and Sam Platsman won 6-0, 6-1, and second doubles Edward Farber and Andrej Tchedrik left with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Joshua Knirel also also won at second singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Vir Patel and Jack Whitney combined to win at second doubles, 7-6(7-2), 5-7, (10-5) to clinch the win for Morris Knolls. Eric Alexander also notched a 6-2, 6-3 win at third singles, while first singles Jacobo Dussan won by forfeit. He led 5-1 in the opening set. Morris Knolls won the Morris County Open Tournament earlier this spring.
Memorial proved it was one of the top teams in Hudson County this season by reaching the area’s tournament final. Now it is trying to make a run in the postseason. Memorial is off to a good start with a singles sweep over Passaic from Andres Lopes, Chris Rodriguez and Gilbert Argueta. Rodriguez didn’t lose a game in his 6-0, 6-0 victory at second singles.
NORTH JERSEY, SECTION 2
Second doubles Nikko Chen and Kevin Guan earned a 6-0, 6-0 shutout in Cedar Grove’s win over Ridgefield. First doubles Adrian Laljie and Krish Patel also won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, while second singles Ronnie D’Amato was the difference with his 6-2, 2-6, (10-6) victory.
Doubles tandems Ronen Dutia/Eli Hannig and Brendan Chou/Krupa Uthanumallion led Parsippany Hills to victory over Parsippany with 6-1, 6-3 wins. Ani Marty also secured a 6-3, 6-1 win at third singles, while Alan Saravanan came back to win at second singles as well, 5-7, 6-1, (10-3).
Cranford has been hot and cold this season, but it was on fire in this one. First doubles Adam Zaidel/Robbie Huerta won in a marathon tiebreaker, 6-4, 6-7(5-7), 7-6(10-8) in the most competitive match of the day. Second doubles Shane Kennedy/Brian Butka also won 6-0, 6-2, third singles Colin Chen came out on top, 7-5, 7-6(8-6) and second singles Parthiv Intwala cruised, 6-0, 6-1.
Belleville was the SEC-Independence winner with an unbeaten mark, but it was Matawan who earned the convincing win here out of the Shore. CJ Rodriguez and Ruhan Patel together won 6-1, 6-2 at first doubles, and Raymond Jiang cruised at first singles, 6-3, 6-1 in the triumph.
North Hunterdon inched closer to the double-digit win mark by beating Middletown North in an tight dual. Tyler Brittain won 6-3, 6-4 at second singles, first doubles Lucas Wojdyla/Zachary Moore recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win and Saish Ragoowansi/Albert Fung notched a 7-6(8-6), 6-3 win. Midd. North beat the Lions, 3-2 the last time these teams played in 2023. This was the Lions first playoff win since 2021.
CENTRAL JERSEY
Henry Hudson went on the road to upset Johnson on Tuesday. First singles Ethan Hartsgrove and third singles Cole Harbinson each won in a 10-point tiebreaker. Hartsgrove notched a 6-3, 4-6, (10-6) victory, while Harbinson came back for a 3-6, 6-3, (10-8) win. Henry Hudson also came out on top at second singles and second doubles.
First doubles Bhuvan Allamsetti and Aneesh Pagedemarry held on for a 6-4, 3-6, (10-7) win at first doubles to lift Robbinsville past Wall. Aritro Ganguly led the way for the Ravens at first singles with a 6-1, 6-1 dominating victory as well, while second doubles Arjun Ravikumar and Ayan Ahmed edged their opponents too, 7-5, 6-4.
Just three seeds separated Point Boro and Ewing, but the Shore Conference squad dropped just five total games in the four matches it won. Joe Doles at first singles and Drew and Dean Cardia at first doubles both shut out their opponents during the victory.
First singles Callan Granito and second singles Trey Arico both shut out their opponents, 6-0, 6-0 to help lift Jackson Memorial into the next round. Third singles Lucas Tobias also didn’t have any trouble in his 6-2, 6-0 win.
SOUTH JERSEY
Gateway advanced over Clayton despite getting shutout at first singles. Isan Salamanca notched a 6-3, 6-0 win at third singles and Ben Cline/Alvaro Sanchis-Moraleja together won 6-2, 6-2 at first doubles. Brian Honabach/Jackson Smith also came back to win at second doubles, 1-6, 6-0, (10-6).
Audubon traveled to the Atlantic Club Tennis Center and earned an easy win. Second and third singles Aaron Ferchen and Gavin Brown, and first doubles Jackson Strong and Jake Vanderslice dropped just a game each. Second doubles Stephen Trieu and Darsheel Salecha also won 6-0, 6-0.
Pinelands was seeded a spot lower than Oakcrest, but Pinelands won all five matches in straight-sets in rather dominating fashion. Ty Kline led the way at first singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win, while first doubles Kai Santa Cruz and Wyatt Pharo also scored a 6-2, 6-1 win.
We correctly predicted this minor seeded upset. Highland blew past Lacey with convincing wins everywhere but third singles. First singles Mohammad Sheyam led the way with a 6-1, 6-3 victory, and first doubles Mathieu Carhuaz and Jacob Roman secured a win by the same score.
With the result hanging in the balance, it was Hammonton’s third singles David Donnelly who clinched the match. Donnelly edged Jarett Hoch to push Hammonton to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 3-6, (10-7). Michael Brown at first singles (6-2, 6-3) and Stanley Smith at second singles (6-1, 6-0) also won for Hammonton.
St. Peter’s Prep won two matches in super tiebreakers to advance to the quarterfinals. Second doubles Hernan Gamble and Finn Getz held on for a 6-1, 7-5, (13-11) win. Second singles Lucas Mira-McKenzie turned his match around to win 0-6, 6-1, (11-9) as well. The Marauders third point came via first doubles Doug Bauman and Jean Oh.
Three of the five individual matches went to 10-point tiebreakers during Seton Hall Prep’s win. Two of them went the Pirates way at doubles. Marco Basile and Tony Sebastian won 6-1, 3-6, (10-7) at first doubles, and Noah Cinnamon and Jonah Basile won 6-2, 2-6, (10-4) at second doubles. Rylon Homer and James O’Brien each cruised at second and third singles as well.
Jai Maurya paced Wardlaw-Hartridge to an upset over Ranney at New Shrewsbury Racquet Club. The first singles standout won 6-1, 7-6(7-4), and was joined in the win column by second singles Richard Zhang (6-3, 6-1), first doubles Justin Lustgarten/Cameron Williams (6-1, 6-2) and second doubles Caden Leu/Pratham Gandhi (7-6(7-4), 6-7(5-7), (10-8).
