Fijians are urged to brace for impact as a tropical disturbance is expected to strike the country by Sunday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding.
During a press conference yesterday, acting permanent secretary for Disaster Risk Management, Salaseini Daunabuna, stressed the importance of preparedness, describing it as a shared responsibility to protect loved ones and communities.
According to Fiji Met, a strong wind warning is now in effect for the Northern Division, northeastern parts of Viti Levu (from Tailevu North through Ra – Rakiraki up to Tavua), the Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups.
Additionally, a heavy rain alert remains in force for the entire Northern Division and the Yasawa Group.
“A low-pressure system lies to the far northwest of Fiji,” Ms Daunabuna said.
“It is expected to gradually intensify while tracking southeast towards Fiji and enter Fiji waters on Sunday, possibly as a tropical disturbance.”
“With the heavy rain alert in place, we are anticipating disruptions to traffic flow and possible road closures,” she continued. “We continue to urge motorists to exercise extreme caution and please avoid crossing flooded roads.”
Ms Daunabuna also urged the public to stay updated on road closures via the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) Facebook page or the FRA Emergency Dashboard, accessible through the page. For travel plans, people can also call 5720.
“We urge households to stock up on essentials in order to prepare for the heavy rains and possible floods,” she added.
“Please ensure that you have enough food, water, emergency power sources, communications, first aid kits, and required medications to last your family for several days. Services might be disrupted in the event of flooding, and it is critical that your families are self-sufficient until services are restored.”
She further noted that strong to near gale force winds, as well as an active trough, are expected to impact parts of the country.
“I wish to emphasise the importance of utilising this information wisely,” she said.
“The public, communities, households, and individuals should take heed of this information to ensure they are well-prepared for this cyclone season.”
With the situation closely monitored by the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) in collaboration with Divisional Emergency Operation Centres (DIVEOCs), Ms Daunabuna assured that evacuation centres would be prepared to accommodate those wishing to evacuate as a precautionary measure.
Police on standby
“The Fiji Police Force is on standby should there be a need to evacuate members of the public from flood-prone areas,” she said.
“We encourage the public to contact the Police toll-free line on 917 if you require assistance in evacuation.”
The Fiji National Disaster Management Office (NDRMO) has called on communities to adhere to the following safety measures:
Refrain from unnecessary travel or movement during the heavy rain period to avoid risks of flooding and landslides. It is crucial to prioritize safety and stay indoors. Parents and guardians must ensure that children and vulnerable family members remain inside during this time.
Community leaders are urged to collaborate with the government to ensure people stay indoors and follow advisories issued by authorities. Traditional leaders, Turaga ni Koro, Mata ni Tikina, Advisory Councillors, and community gatekeepers play a critical role in keeping communities safe and ensuring necessary precautions are taken.
Ms Daunabuna added the NDRMO would continue issuing advisories to keep the public informed.
“We urge the public to take responsibility for their safety and that of their families,” she said.
“Please, extend your care to your neighbours and vulnerable individuals in your communities—ensure they are aware of the warnings and have the necessary resources to stay safe.”
