Former Brisbane Broncos legend Steve Renouf has apologised after being charged with high-range drink driving in Brisbane.
Officers performing routine licence and roadside breath tests stopped a car on Windsor Road in Red Hill just before 11pm on Tuesday night.
Police allege the driver, 55-year-old Steve Renouf, returned a positive result for alcohol.
Mr Renouf was taken to the Brisbane police watch house, where police allege he returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.197 per cent — almost four times the legal limit.
His licence was suspended and he was charged with one count of driving under the influence of liquor.
He is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 16.
'I am sorry'
Mr Renouf played 183 games in the NRL, taking the Broncos to four premierships in the 1990s.
He is an ambassador for Deadly Choices, a program that advocates for better health choices in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
In a social media post, Mr Renouf said he was sorry and that he recognised his actions were "unacceptable".
"I have let down my family, the Broncos' fans, the rugby league community, the Queensland public and my mob," the post read.
He said he was "embarrassed and disappointed" with his actions.
