Stricter emissions rules for Estepona drivers
@Source: euroweeklynews.com
Estepona has officially implemented a sweeping restriction on vehicles with the B environmental label, barring them from entering the town’s Low Emission Zone (ZBE). The move, already in effect, targets older diesel cars registered from 2006 (Euro 4) and petrol cars from before 2001 (Euro 3), which could impact scores of local drivers. For Estepona residents, the new rule is a significant shift in how you’ll have to navigate the town, with hefty fines of around €200 for non-compliance on the horizon. The ban is part of Estepona’s commitment to the Climate Change Law, which mandates that towns with over 50,000 inhabitants establish LEZs (ZBEs in Spanish) to reduce emissions. Unlike other towns, Estepona has wasted no time, joining Madrid, Bilbao, and Getafe in enforcing the restrictions. While Madrid leads the way with its Special Protection Low Emission Zone (ZBEDEP), allowing B-label vehicles only to access public or private parking, and Bilbao introduced its ban on June 15, 2024, Estepona’s immediate action reflects its determination to clean up the town’s air. Getafe, on the outskirts of Madrid, by contrast, won’t enforce its ban until January 27, 2026. For Estepona residents, the implications are clear: if your vehicle carries the B label, you’re now barred from driving into the town’s ZBE. The rule applies to all diesel and petrol vehicles that don’t meet stricter emission standards, leaving many to rethink daily commutes, errands, or trips to the town centre. Unlike Bilbao, which offers exemptions for residents registered before June 15, 2024, vehicles for people with reduced mobility, emergency units, or those awaiting delivery of a low-emission vehicle, Estepona has not publicised similar exceptions. It has been suggested that residents check the town hall’s official website for any specific allowances, such as limited daily passes, and to keep documentation handy to avoid fines from automated cameras monitoring license plates.
