Good Morning Britain returned to television screens with a fresh episode on Tuesday (26 August) morning, presented by Richard Madeley and Charlotte Hawkins . The hosting pair delivered all the day's top stories to ITV audiences and welcomed Olympian Iwan Thomas for a live discussion following the launch of his memoir, Brutal. Throughout their conversation, Iwan reflected on his remarkable sprinting journey and the challenging periods he faced over the years, particularly whilst battling various injuries. "It was therapeutic and quite painful, at times, as well," he revealed regarding the experience of penning his autobiography. "You mentioned my mental health, I'm very brutally honest in that book about [how] on the one hand sport has given me a wonderful way of life and I absolutely owe it everything, but it was also a thing that mentally and physically broke me." Iwan's athletic journey included representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Olympic competition in the 400 metres. He secured silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and holds titles as a former European, Commonwealth Games, and World 4 x 400 metres relay champion. Throughout his sporting journey, he endured numerous injuries, including a stress fracture to his ankle requiring surgical intervention, plus damage to his Achilles tendon. Injury prevented his participation in the 2004 Olympics, and he was also sidelined from the 2006 Commonwealth Games due to physical setbacks. Discussing the challenges he faced as a young athlete, Iwan confessed on GMB that he felt like he was "losing" his identity as he grappled with life after sport, reports Wales Online . "I was very open, and it was publicised that it physically broke me. My career was cut short because of injuries. "But, I kept to myself the dark side and how that made me feel inside. Losing my identity, not knowing what I was going to do," Iwan revealed. He continued, "By the time I was 24, I think I had a medal from every single major championship. By the time I was 25, my career was on the way down because of injuries. "That's a young age to worry about what you're going to do for the rest of your life." Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
