The Matildas have slipped to their equal worst position in the history of the FIFA world rankings.
After losing all three matches at the recent SheBelieves Cup in the United States, the Matildas fell one place to number 16.
The Matildas last held the same ranking in 2005, two years after FIFA introduced the women's standings.
They lost to Japan (4-0), United States (2-1) and Colombia (2-1) in the SheBelieves Cup and are still seeking a new full-time coach to replace Tony Gustavsson, who departed after the Paris Olympics failure.
The Matildas did not progress from the group stage at last year's Olympics after producing a 1-2 win-loss record from their three pool matches.
Tom Sermanni is holding the fort as interim coach while Football Australia searches for Gustavsson's replacement.
But with three wins, two draws and seven losses from their past 12 matches, the Matildas are showing no signs of emerging from a slump that has not been helped by the long term absence through injury of Sam Kerr.
The Matildas were ranked as high as number four in 2017.
The latest FIFA rankings have the United States retaining its number one spot, ahead of Spain, Germany and England.
Japan, the winner of the SheBelieves Cup, rounds out the top five, having risen three spots on the rankings.
