Stuart Hogg complies with community payback order in domestic abuse case

A sheriff has commended former Scotland rugby union captain Stuart Hogg for his "complete compliance" with a community payback order, stating that no further reviews would be necessary. The 32-year-old had previously admitted to a single charge of domestic abuse against his ex-partner, Gillian Hogg, spanning five years, during his appearance at Selkirk Sheriff Court in November last year. He confessed to shouting and swearing, monitoring her movements, and sending her messages that were alarming and distressing. Sheriff Peter Paterson handed down a community payback order with one year of supervision as an alternative to imprisonment when he sentenced Hogg in January. Mr Hogg also received a five-year ban from approaching or contacting Mrs Hogg. At a subsequent review of the order at Jedburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, Hogg was absent but represented by his solicitor Mat Patrick. Mr Patrick stated: "This is the second review of this order." He argued: "My submission is that the order should be allowed to continue." Sheriff Paterson enquired whether Hogg – who plays for French side Montpellier – was back in the UK, to which Mr Patrick confirmed he was not. Upon reviewing the order, Sheriff Paterson remarked on the full compliance with it. He declared: "My intention is that there would be no further review." Mr Patrick was informed that his client would not require any further review of the community payback order. John and Margaret Hogg were present at the court hearing. Rugby ace Stuart Hogg faced a ban from contacting Mrs Hogg for five years issued in December, as Jedburgh Sheriff Court heard he had breached bail conditions by repetitively messaging her in June, with one instance involving 28 texts in a single night. Moreover, he incurred a fine of £600 plus an additional victim surcharge of £40. Selkirk Sheriff Court had previously been told of instances where Hogg had lambasted Mrs Hogg for "not being fun" following his drinking sessions with workmates, and on another occasion bombarded her with over 200 texts within hours. Although Hogg hung up his professional rugby boots in July 2023, he staged a comeback by securing a two-year deal with Montpellier last summer. Having played for both Glasgow Warriors and Exeter Chiefs, Hogg was honoured with an MBE for his services to rugby in the most recent New Year Honours list. Despite this accolade, SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn has urged that Hogg's MBE be revoked following the court proceedings.
