Stuart McCloskey set for landmark 200th cap for Ulster in vital United Rugby Championship clash against Stormers

The Ireland centre will win his 200th cap for the province, joining the likes of Andrew Trimble, Roger Wilson, Darren Cave and Rob Herring as an Ulster double centurion. McCloskey recalls how his professional career started, leading him on a path to a grand slam and the World Cup. “Dragons at home, 20th February, 2014, I came off the bench for – I think, Lukey Marshall got injured after about 20-odd minutes, got concussed – I do remember bits of it,” he said. “I saw a picture Ulster put out, a video montage of it and that brought back some memories. “I wouldn't say I got the same buzz I got that night, it's still there. I don't get as nervous, I wouldn't really get as nervous now, unless it's a massive, massive game. “I'm a bit more sure of myself, of what I can do as a rugby player, thankfully, after 199 games,” McCloskey added. “The buzz is still there, the want to win is still there. Thankfully, the nerves aren't as bad as they used to be.” Naturally McCloskey has matured as a player during his Ulster career. “In a rugby sense, I think I came in very green to what professional rugby was, having not really been involved in age group stuff,” he said. “It was a different time in professional rugby as well, guys now are in pathways from when they're 13, 14. “It was a bit more manageable when I was that age to come in when I was 19, maybe, and start doing it, but yeah, I'd say I'm a bit more up to date in what the tactics are in the game, how the game works. “The game has probably evolved and I'd like to think I'm a lot better now than when I was then. Maybe don't have the half yard of pace I used to, but I still get around all right.” The centre still has a burning desire to win silverware and end Ulster’s 19-year trophy drought. “I said it before, I think it was after maybe the Grand Slam I won where I was involved – it genuinely would mean more to me for us to win here. “It would definitely mean more. I’d look back with fonder memories if we won something here, whether that's this year or whether it's me hanging on the coattails of those young lads that are maturing in two or three years, I'd be happy if one of them happened.” McCloskey has had a lot of influences throughout his career on his way to 200 caps. He said: “Family, it's an easy one to cliche of your parents, but all the work they put in when you're younger, taking you to all the things. Even when I was playing, I thought I was going to be a professional golfer when I was 13 or 14, [my parents were] driving me around the country doing that. “For me, they had to go and end up playing rugby and follow me around Europe. “Doing that, fair play to them. I know I tell them to get some good weekends out of it now, but it takes a lot, especially when I'm younger and they're giving up their weekends for me. “Coaching-wise, there's been so many. Faz (Andy Farrell) is up there giving me the opportunity to play for Ireland as much as he has. “At Ulster, there's been a good few, Neil Doak was probably at the start, he was probably the first proper coach I worked with. “I still talk to him now about a lot of stuff because he's still around, involved with the academy a lot and he was probably one of the biggest influences just because of the age I was when he was attack coach. "He was harsh now, but looking back on it, it was probably good for me when I was 20, 21, 22; he'd be up there.” Ulster: (15-9) M Lowry; R Baloucoune, J Hume, S McCloskey, J Stockdale; J Murphy, J Cooney; (1-8) A Warwick, R Herring, T O’Toole; A O’Connor (captain), K Treadwell; Matty Rea, N Timoney, D McCann. Replacements: T Stewart, C Reid, S Wilson, H Sheridan, J McNabney, N Doak, B Carson, Z Ward.
