A breathtaking seaside cottage where Ian Fleming is believed to have written several of his James Bond novels has gone on the market for £1.75 million. Mermaid Cottage is one of four 1920s art deco properties set in spectacular location nestled at the base of the White Cliffs in Dover, Kent. The quartet of homes were previously owned by both novelist Fleming and dramatist Noel Coward between 1951 and 1957, and 1945 and 1951 respectively. Whilst Fleming and Coward resided in the property at the far end of the four houses, Fleming is thought to have crafted several of the Bond tales in Mermaid Cottage - including Moonraker. Alongside its "rich history of famous connections", the residence has also been entirely refurbished by its current owner over the last 20 years with luxury interiors. The open plan living space commands stunning sea views whilst the study features French doors leading out onto a terrace. A custom Smallbone kitchen has been installed at the back of the property and the main bedroom on the upper floor boasts a generous balcony with the "constant soothing noise of waves lapping the shore". Outside the property features an annexe equipped with a gym, workspace and storage area, plus a deck, courtyard, and a tropical-style garden designed by an RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winner. A spokesperson for the estate agents described the location, stating: "St Margaret's Bay is a sheltered haven, with a clifftop mainly in the care of the National Trust providing some delightful walks and the shingle beach offering a popular café and an inn, The Coastguard. "There are golf courses at nearby Kingsdown and Deal together with St George's at Sandwich." They added: "St Margaret's village provides a range of local amenities, with further leisure, educational and shopping facilities in nearby Deal, Dover and Canterbury." The property also boasts excellent transport links to the M2, London St Pancras station, and the Continent via the Eurotunnel and the Port of Dover.
