‘Suicide by Cop’: Armed Man Fatally Shot By New York Police Officer Outside Staten Island Diner
@Source: timesnownews.com
A man with a history of mental health issues, armed with a realistic-looking BB gun, was fatally shot Friday night by an off-duty police officer outside a popular Staten Island diner, according to a report by New York Post quoting New York Police Department. Shots were fired shortly after 8 pm outside Andrew’s Diner on Hylan Boulevard in Eltingville, the NYPD said. The armed man, identified as 44-year-old Jesse Campbell, confronted two off-duty NYPD officers outside the diner and pointed the supposed weapon at them, according to New York Post. However, police have not confirmed the man's name. During the encounter, a female off-duty detective from the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau fired several shots at the suspect, hitting him multiple times, according to NYPD and sources, the report claimed. The report further mentioned that police have a video that showed off-duty officers giving Cambell instructions to drop the gun before the shooting. Notably, Campbell was taken to Staten Island University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Sources said Campbell struggled with “significant” mental health issues and had allegedly told his mother and sister earlier that day that he planned to provoke police into killing him. " It looks like suicide by cop," a police source told New York post. In a post on X, NYPD advised that traffic delays in the vicinity, as well as increased presence of emergency vehicles, should be expected.
