The San Francisco 49ers have signed former Super Bowl champion punter Thomas Morstead to a contract, adding to their special-teams expertise.
Morstead, 39, had spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets before becoming a free agent and not being retained by the team.
Morstead finds a professional lifeline in the Bay Area after former Jets head coach Robert Saleh became the 49ers new defensive coordinator after being fired in New York last October.
The punter himself spoke on the signing, posting a selfie outside Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.
'Grateful is an understatement!' Morstead added in the caption.
Morstead is best known for his 12-season stint with the New Orleans Saints, winning the Super Bowl with the team in his rookie season in 2009.
