Mikel, who was on commentary duty during the match, openly criticised Sanchez’s decision-making, pointing out a crucial mistake that could have cost his team.
Mikel questions Sanchez’s judgment after another mistake
Despite Chelsea securing the win, Robert Sanchez’s return to the starting lineup was anything but smooth for the Spanish goalkeeper.
The 27-year-old shot-stopper, who had previously been dropped due to a string of errors, was handed a chance to redeem himself against Leicester. However, his performance left much to be desired, with Mikel openly questioning his decision-making.
Speaking after the game, the former Super Eagles star said, "There was a mistake from Robert Sanchez again, which luckily didn’t end up in [a] goal, but what was he doing? I don’t get it.”
The former Nigerian captain particularly took issue with Sanchez’s positioning on a cross, arguing that Chelsea’s central defenders could have dealt with the situation without their goalkeeper’s interference.
Chelsea’s goalkeeping dilemma continues to raise eyebrows
Sanchez has been under the spotlight for several high-profile errors this season, and while Chelsea’s backline managed to prevent his latest blunder from proving costly, Mikel’s comments have only intensified the growing doubts about his reliability.
After multiple mistakes earlier in the season led to his temporary demotion, his performance against Leicester has done little to restore confidence in his abilities.
With Djordje Petrovic providing solid performances in Sanchez’s absence, the decision to reinstate the Spaniard has left many puzzled. Now, after yet another nervy display, the scrutiny on Sanchez has only gotten worse.
While Chelsea walked away with all three points, the spotlight remains on Sanchez’s performance and if errors continue to creep into his game, the goalkeeping situation at Stamford Bridge may become an even bigger headache for manager Enzo Maresca as the season progresses.
