Taron Egerton almost made his She Rides Shotgun ink permanent. During a Tuesday, July 29, appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the actor, 35, opened up about his time shooting the crime thriller. When host Seth Meyers brought up the smattering of tattoos required for the role, Egerton said that he "quite enjoyed" the fake ink and that it made him "feel really kind of tough." The actor liked it so much, in fact, that he "nearly did a crazy thing" and got a real version of his character's neck tattoo of a red and green chili pepper. "I was all ready and booked to get that tattooed on my head on the last day of the shoot in that spot," Egerton recalled. "I don't know what on earth I was thinking, actually, but I really was ready to do it, it was a very cool, trendy New Mexico tattoo artist." However, the Carry-On star shared what ultimately deterred him from going through with the ink. "The thing that happened that I hadn't anticipated was the last day of the shoot, my mum was in town," he explained. "The makeup artist who set it up, about halfway through the day, she said, 'So you're all set for this evening at 8:30 and I just panicked immediately. And my mom went, 'I beg your pardon?' " After trying to explain to his mom why he wanted to get the tattoo, Egerton says she "did this classic mum thing" of turning away from him in disappointment. "Canceled it immediately," he said. "Panicked it and canceled it immediately." While appearing on the Today show on Tuesday, July 29, the Smoke actor reflected on returning to social media for the first time since taking a hiatus in 2023. "I got back on to promote this movie," Egerton said of She Rides Shotgun. "This movie is a bit of a little engine. It's harder to spread the word of a movie of this size." As to how he's feeling since returning to social media, Egerton joked, "I feel worse." "I genuinely don't think it's good for your mental health," the actor continued. "I will be hopping back off once the film is out." He added that he has concerns about his teenage sisters scrolling social media. "I think I'm better off without it," he said for himself. In 2023, Egerton shared a lengthy Instagram post explaining why he would be taking a break from social media. “I’m not sure why I’m making a big declaration about it; I just think it’s hard to break away from a cycle that I’ve grown to find a bit addictive and this is me making a commitment to myself,” he wrote. The Rocketman actor continued, "I’ve gotten myself into a place where I spend too much time scrolling and I actually feel like my ability to sit and be present and read books and watch movies and even seek out the company of people I love is eroding as a result.” “I feel a bit removed from myself. And with regards to work, I know I am capable of more and IG [Instagram] is one of several impediments to getting me there," he concluded.
