The much anticipated return of tighthead prop Luke Tagi in the Flying Fijian colours came to an abrupt halt yesterday.
The Bayonne forward has been ruled out due to an ankle injury he had sustained in their French Top 14 semi-final clash against Toulouse last Saturday.
After careful consultation between Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne, Tagi, and the medical staff at Bayonne, it was mutually agreed that he should stand down from all rugby activities to focus on a full recovery and receive the necessary medical treatment.
“Luke is an important part of our squad, and his presence will be missed during the upcoming matches,” said Byrne.
“However, his long-term health and recovery are our top priorities. We’re confident he’ll receive the best possible care in France and look forward to seeing him back at full strength in the future.”
Tagi, who is contracted with Bayonne until 2028, will remain in France to undergo rehabilitation.
In his absence, the Flying Fijians have called up Fijian Drua’s Samu Tawake as his replacement for the Test matches against Australia and Scotland.
Byrne extended their best wishes to Tagi for a speedy recovery and thank Tawake for stepping up to represent the national team.
The Flying Fijians are scheduled to meet the Wallabies on July 6 in Newcastle followed by their home test against Scotland in Suva on July 12.
