Rugby star Nicolas Haddad, 15, has died. Nicolas had been playing for Saint-Maximin-Brignoles-Val d’Issole in a match against Bastia last weekend when he suffered the fatal injury during the clash. A witness said during a tackle, Nicolas lowered himself to engage an opponent, inadvertently receiving a knee to his head. The sudden impact caused the 15-year-old to collapse on the field where he went into cardiac arrest. He was transported to a hospital in Bastia, but sadly died. "It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Nicolas Haddad, a child of RSMXV since the M6 category and who played in cadets in the alliance of our three clubs and at the RCT," a statement said. "All our prayers go out to the family who wish to preserve their privacy. "Our clubs thank the leaders of Bastia XV, the Ligue Sud de rugby, the Corsican rugby league and the FFR for their support of the parents and the team." Rugby Club Toulonnais added in a statement: "It’s an absolute tragedy. Rugby is in mourning. Nicolas Haddad has left us. All our thoughts go to his wonderful family and all those who supported them.” Patrice Blachère, Rugby Club Toulonnais's CEO, added: "When we suggested he join us in the RCT Passion project, he was overjoyed. It was a source of pride for him and his parents. He loved rugby, and it is terrible to lose such a passionate young athlete. "We must give him a tribute." The French Rugby League confirmed that a minute of silence will be observed on rugby fields throughout the region for the upcoming weekend. Upon the team's return to Toulon, a psychological support unit has been offered to the players.
