A 15-year-old rugby player has tragically died after suffering a fatal injury during a match. Nicolas Haddad was playing for Saint-Maximin-Brignoles-Val d’Issole (RSMXV) in their match against Bastia on the island of Corsica on Saturday when witnesses say he suffered a blow to the head as he went to make a tackle. The impact caused him to collapse on the field and he went into cardiac arrest. Haddad was immediately attended to by a nurse and firefighter who had been watching the match before being rushed to hospital, but he never regained consciousness and tragically passed away. The teenager was dual registered with RSMXV and French rugby giants Toulon, who have released a statement confirming the tragic news that has left French rugby in mourning. "It is with infinite sadness that we inform you of the death of Nicolas Haddad, a child of the RSMXV from the M6 category and who played as cadets in the agreement of our three clubs and at the RCT,” the statement read. "All our prayers go to the family who wishes to preserve their intimacy. Our clubs thank the leaders of Bastia XV, the South Rugby League, the Corsican Rugby League and the FFR for supporting parents and the team." Toulon co-president Patrice Blachere described Haddad's death as an "absolute tragedy", saying the teenager had a promising rugby career ahead of him having joined the club aged just six. "Rugby is in mourning. Nicolas Haddad has left us," he said."All our thoughts go to his wonderful family and all those who supported them. He loved rugby, and it is terrible to lose such a passionate young athlete.” Further tributes are set to be paid to Haddad, with Toulon set to display a photo of him on the big screens around their ground prior to their clash with USA Perpignan on Saturday. Additionally, all matches being played on Corsica this weekend will be preceded by a minute's silence in the teenager's memory.
