Tennis Star Shares Positive Update After Opening Up About Mental Health Struggles
@Source: news18.com
Argentine tennis star Federico Gomez has shared a positive update of him embracing life as he returned to nature and sport. Earlier this month, the 28-year-old conceded a heartbreaking loss in the qualifiers of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. Days later, Gomez made headlines after revealing he was suffering from depression. The Argentine also explained how he often had suicidal thoughts. He shared his struggles with mental health, aiming to raise awareness and encourage others to speak up. A week after the post, Gomez shared an update in a now-expired Instagram story. Uploading a photograph of a golf course, he wrote (via SportsKeeda), “Disconnect to reconnect.”
Federico Gomez turned pro in 2014, but his most successful run came last year as he won three Challenger titles. All his three wins were on clay with triumphs in Milan, Trieste and Guayaquil. Gomez also claimed his first ATP win and competed in the qualifying rounds of the US Open 2024 and the Australian Open 2025.
In last week’s post, Federico Gomez spoke about how he thoroughly enjoyed his run last year. The 28-year-old, however, was still unhappy with himself as he continued to fight the demons inside him. “Living with thoughts of quitting tennis completely, of really questioning whether all of this ly worth it and even on repeated occasions suicidal thoughts of not wanting to live anymore and leaving this world, which I find very difficult to express,” he wrote on Instagram.

While Federico Gomez didn’t go into the details of the problems, the Argentine clarified that he wasn’t seeking fame or sympathy. “I don’t write this looking for some minute of fame, but I do it so you know and understand that we all have internal struggles that we are living despite not being shown or hidden in the day-to-day,” he wrote. Gomez’s shocking admission led to legends like Novak Djokovic, Boris Becker and Paula Badosa extending their support to the 28-year-old.
Federico Gomez’s incredible run in 2024 saw him climb to a career-high ranking of 133. As for his recent defeat, the Argentine lost in the first round of the qualifiers against the USA’s Rudy Quan 4-6, 5-7. It came two weeks after his defeat to Learner Tien in the qualifiers for the Mexico Open. While the Argentine hasn’t gotten notable results this year, he will be eyeing more accolades in upcoming events.
