PTC News Desk: US President announced on Saturday that both Thailand and Combodia have agreed to hold ceasefire talks following three days of border clashes leaving over 30 people dead and more than 130,000 displaced.Trump in his Truth Social post said he had separately spoken to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, warning both leaders that continued fighting would jeopardise potential US trade deals.“Both parties are looking for an immediate ceasefire and peace,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, detailing his efforts to mediate the conflict. He added that both nations were eager to return to the “trading table.”“They have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!” he added. However, neither the White House nor the involved embassies have confirmed details of the upcoming talks. The recent outbreak of violence marks the most intense confrontation between Thailand and Cambodia in over ten years. Clashes escalated on Saturday in Thailand’s Trat Province and Cambodia’s Pursat Province, creating a new front more than 100 kilometres from where the conflict first erupted. Tensions reignited following the killing of a Cambodian soldier in late May, prompting both nations to increase troop presence along their disputed 817-kilometre border. The conflict largely stems from long-standing disagreements over the ownership of historic temples—particularly the Preah Vihear temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site that was awarded to Cambodia by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 1962, a ruling Thailand has never fully accepted.By Saturday, Thailand reported 20 deaths (seven soldiers and 13 civilians), while Cambodia confirmed 13 casualties (five soldiers and eight civilians). Cambodia’s defence ministry accused Thailand of unwarranted aggression and a military buildup, urging the global community to denounce the escalation. In response, Thailand emphasized its commitment to resolving the issue through bilateral dialogue and accused Cambodia of deploying landmines and launching cross-border attacks. As tensions grew, the Indian embassy in Cambodia issued a travel advisory on Saturday, advising Indian citizens to steer clear of the border areas.Thailand also raised concerns over Cambodian “aggression” during a UN Security Council session on Friday. Meanwhile, Cambodia is seeking renewed intervention from the ICJ, a move Thailand has dismissed, stating the court lacks jurisdiction.
