The Abaco Club
The Boston-based ownership of The Abaco Club in the Bahamas recently dedicated its new sports field in honor of former Major League Baseball pitcher Tim Wakefield and his wife, Stacy, both of whom were beloved members of the private lifestyle club and community.
An homage to Boston’s historic Fenway Park, “Wake Field,” as it’s been christened, has its own “Green Monster” outfield wall and is situated in the heart of the club’s amenity corridor. The all-turf field is intended for games of wiffle ball or kickball among members and their guests.
Wakefield, best known as a knuckleball pitcher and philanthropist, played 19 major league seasons with the Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates, winning 200 games. He’s the Red Sox’ all-time leader in innings-pitched and received MLB’s 2010 Roberto Clemente Award in recognition of his sportsmanship, community involvement and contribution to his team.
Wakefield passed away at the age of 57 in October 2023 following a seizure resulting from brain cancer. His wife succumbed to pancreatic cancer about six months later. The couple’s children, Brianna, 18, and Trevor, 16, participated in a dedication ceremony earlier this month at Wake Field while Boston-based Southworth, the owners and operators of The Abaco Club, also made a contribution to the Red Sox Foundation in the Wakefields’ name.
Wake Field is another amenity for members and their guests at The Abaco Club, which is one of top ... [+] destination private clubs in the Caribbean and has a well-regarded golf course that hosts an annual Korn Ferry Tour event.

“Tim and Stacy Wakefield were the consummate members and even better human beings, which made the dedication of our sports field in their honor an easy choice,” says Tommy Southworth, President of Southworth. “(Their) impact was felt far beyond the game. Tim’s passion for golf and the friendships he built here, alongside Stacy’s warmth and generosity, left a lasting mark on all who knew them. We’re honored to celebrate their memory in a way that reflects their spirit and the connections they forged.”
Beyond baseball, Wakefield was an avid golfer who regularly participated in celebrity golf tournaments. He was a familiar face at the American Century Championship, where he was honored posthumously at the 2024 event. Tributes included his number 49 embroidered on hats, stenciled in the fairway exactly 49 yards off the tee box of the 18th hole, and featured on the flag at the 18th green.
Wakefield, who died of brain cancer at age 57, was known for his philanthropy as well as his ... [+] signature knuckleball.
