A FRUSTRATED Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal have been the best team in the Champions League this season despite their exit to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
Arsenal’s European dream was ended by goals from Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi, who earned Paris Saint-Germain a 2-1 win on the night and a Champions League final date with Inter Milan.
The French champions were under immediate pressure as Declan Rice got under a Jurrien Timber cross to head off target, kickstarting a frantic five-minute spell that required Gianluigi Donnarumma to pull off outstanding stops to keep out Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli. The early didn’t goal didn’t come and Arsenal were always playing catch-up from that point.
The Gunners have failed to progress from each of their last four major cup semi-finals (2020-21 Europa League, 2021-22 League Cup, 2024-25 League Cup, 2024-25 Champions League).
Arteta believes his side deserved to make the final based on the two legs and pointed to the performances of Donnarumma as the key factor in their failure to do so.
“I don’t think there’s been a better team in the competition form what I’ve seen,” Arteta told TNT Sports.
“But we are out. We deserved much more but this competition is about the boxes, the strikers most of the time and the goalkeeper and theirs was the best player in both games.
“I’m so proud of the boys, they deserve lots of credit for what they’re doing and the amount of injuries. We arrived here in the worst state. You have to get here with everyone fit and available with lots of minutes. They had a week. We came here in a different context. That gives me a lot of positivity for the future.”
Indian captain retires from Test cricket
INDIA captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket but has stated he will continue to play one-day internationals. The 38-year-old quit T20 international cricket after leading India to their second T20 World Cup title in the West Indies last year.
“Hello everyone, I would like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket,” Rohit posted on his Instagram story.
“It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years.
“I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
Rohit played 67 Tests for his country, with his retirement meaning he will no longer play a part in India’s five-Test tour of England this summer.
It comes after a prolonged run of poor form for the veteran batter, with Rohit scoring only one fifty in his last 15 Test innings, averaging 10.93, a span which included 10 single-digit scores.
In India’s most recent 3-1 Test series defeat to Australia over the winter, Rohit averaged 6.20 across five innings before sitting out the final Test in Sydney.
Rohit’s career batting average was 40.57 across his 67 Test matches, including 12 hundreds and 18 half centuries.
India are due to face England in a five-Test series this summer, starting at Headingley on June 20. Of his seven Tests played in England, Rohit scored one century, with 127 at The Oval in 2021. — Sky Sport
