This is why it is so important that shoppers across Ireland understand that the safety of the eggs they consume may vary depending on how they were produced.
While the strict laws and regulations around food production in Ireland ensure that most eggs sold in the country are safe to eat, not all those available meet the preferred level of food safety, the Irish Mirror reports.
Families with young children, pregnant women, older adults and anyone with a weaker immune system must make themselves aware of what to look out for when selecting produce, and it's important to choose eggs that are produced under strict safety standards - particularly if you like them runny or raw.
Luckily, there's a simple way to check that you're purchasing the highest quality produce, thanks to the Bord Bia 'Q' Mark.
Eggs carrying the Q Mark are produced to the highest international standards and are regularly checked by Bord Bia and pass stringent regulations to be labelled with the mark.
If you see the Origin Ireland Q Mark, you can be confident that the eggs were laid and packed right here in Ireland.
Though small, the mark is mighty, with Ireland being one of only four EU countries with an EU-approved salmonella control plan, putting it in the top tier for egg safety.
Shoppers can also use the egg traceability code stamped on each individual egg to decipher exactly what they need to know about their batch.
The EU introduced legislation which makes it easy for consumers to identify exactly where each egg they buy comes from and how it was produced, according to eggs.ie
Decipher the traceability code on your eggs:
The farming method will be indicated by a number from 0 to 3. A '0' indicates an egg from a free-range hen, while a '3' is an egg from a caged hen.
Beside the farming code will be letters, this is the country code. For example, eggs produced in Ireland will say 'IE'.
The eggs will also have another code, with a specific letter denoting the county of origin, and a number representing the actual farm it is from.
Lastly, the egg will have a best before date stamped on it.
According to eggs.ie, since the Bord Bia Egg Quality Assurance Scheme launched over 10 years ago, there have been no salmonella outbreaks in certified flocks, Irish Mirror reports.
Every Bord Bia Quality Assured egg is traceable, tested regularly for salmonella and produced using heat-treated, salmonella-free feed. They are also stamped with the Bord Bia logo on both the egg and the packaging, so it's super easy to identify the right eggs to buy.
So, shop happy knowing that you can keep kids and loved ones safe, without sacrificing the quick and healthy meals!
