He was once one of Hollywood’s biggest heartthrobs and was dubbed the ‘French Brad Pitt’.
Two decades have passed since the peak of his fame in the Noughties, and Olivier Martinez finds himself far removed from the tall, dark, and handsome actor he once was, now entangled in tough legal disputes and with limited acting roles.
Olivier, now 59, gained recognition for his performances in films like Unfaithful and S.W.A.T. He achieved significant success in the film industry, including winning a prestigious César Award and appearing in major Hollywood productions.
Throughout his life, the actor was involved in several notable relationships, dating celebrities like Kylie Minogue and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and eventually marrying Halle Berry.
Yet in recent years, Olivier has shirked the spotlight with his new lifestyle a far cry from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood he once enjoyed.
Since 2018, he has appeared in only three movies, suggesting a retreat from the limelight as he becomes embroiled in a contentious custody case, which alleged he was relying on financial support from his former spouse, Halle Berry.
Olivier and Halle wed in 2013 – the same year they welcomed their son Maceo, 11 – and split in 2016.
The couple’s divorce was finalised in 2023, with the outcome being joint custody and Halle paying child support.
But last year Halle launched a legal battle against the actor as she claimed he was trying to take time off from their co-parenting therapy – requesting that he is compelled to participate.
In October, a judge sided with the actress, after Halle claimed he was trying to take time off from their co-parenting therapy and requested he is compelled to participate.
The judge agreed with Halle in legal documents obtained by TMZ, but noted that Olivier already complied with her request after she took him to court.
In documents obtained by US Weekly, Halle claimed she has spent over $200,000 in legal fees including ‘voluntarily’ contributing $80,000 towards Olivier’s own legal expenses.
She also claimed the actor was supporting himself financially using her child support payments.
Halle was seeking sole custody of their child as she claimed Maceo is struggling in school and that he is, ‘grade levels behind,’ adding he’d been diagnosed with ADHD and mild dyslexia.
Halle, who also shares daughter, Nahla, 16, with her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry, 47, added that Olivier was, ‘either oblivious’ to his difficulties or, ‘carelessly disregards them,’ which she said proves he’s unfit for custody.
She claimed his ‘turbulent behavior’ and his prioritising of their son learning soccer over school has resulted in Maceo falling behind his classmates.
The former couple met in 2010 on the set of the film Dark Tide in South Africa.
Before he met Halle, Olivier dated model Rosie in 2009 after they met at a Victoria`s Secret fashion show – where she made her debut.
The couple appeared in happy spirits during their relationship but the pair went their separate ways over long distance issues.
Olivier also famously dated Australian singer Kylie from 2003 to 2007 after he met her at the Grammy Awards.
He was believed to be a source of strength for the songstress when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005.
He reportedly helped her cope with difficult hurdles and encouraged her to find moments of joy even during her treatment.
Despite their flourishing romance, the pair went their separate ways after rumours that Olivier was unfaithful with Israeli-born actress, model and artist Sarai Givati.
At the time, Olivier and Kylie denied the reports of infidelity and it has appeared that they have remained friends as they were spotted enjoying a lunch together after Olivier’s divorce.
Before Kylie he was romantically involved with American actress Mira Sorvino from 1999 to 2002.
Olivier shot to fame in 1995 after he starred in The Horseman on the Roof, billed in his American promotional tour for that movie as ‘the French Brad Pitt’.
He is originally from a working-class family, raised in the Paris suburbs and left school at an early age, holding various pick-up jobs such as salesman for jeans.
Olivier was initially going to follow in his father’s footsteps and try to become a boxer but his friends urged him to try acting, and at age 23 he enrolled in the International Conservatory of Paris.
After several television shows, he reached the international market in 1995 and went on to star an array of films and TV shows.
Before his international fame, he bagged the Most Promising Actor at the César Awards in 1994.
Olivier also won the Prix Jean Gabin award in 1933 and was nominated for Best Male Performance for The Steamy Awards.
Since his debut as Rollo Navarro in 1990, the actor has starred in 34 productions with his most notable including Unfaithful, S.W.A.T., Before Night Falls, Taking Lives, and The Horseman on the Roof.
He also received critical acclaim for his performance in Un, deux, trois, soleil – which translates to 1, 2, 3, Sun and is a 1993 French surrealist black comedy film directed by Bertrand Blier.
Between 2000 and 2004 the actor starred in 10 productions but since then his work has been fleeting.
He last starred in 2020’s Mosquito State – a Polish-American psychological thriller.
Olivier currently lives in Los Angeles, California, and he has not confirmed a romantic relationship with anyone since his divorce.
