Roman Kemp is reuniting with Sarah Greene for a third run to The Finish Line - but he's admitted his experience on Million Pound Drop left him reeling. For the presenter, 32, returning to the BBC quiz show was a no-brainer. “I would never do a show I don’t enjoy,” he says. “For quiz shows, series three is a bit of a myth. So many don’t even make it to that.” Even when contestants stumble, the focus is on fun. That’s something Roman Kemp feels strongly about, given his own history with quiz shows. He’s still haunted by going on to Million Pound Drop back in 2012 with his father, pop star Martin Kemp. “I once lost my dad a million pounds on Million Pound Drop,” he says, “This was peak Twitter, I got killed and I felt so stupid.” That experience shaped his approach to hosting. “From the moment this show was launched, I wanted to make sure that no one ever left feeling like that,” he says. “The most important thing for me is that people have fun.” Sarah was delighted to return to the quiz show. “He’s heard me say this a hundred times over, but I do consider him my TV son,” she says. “I’m there purely to look after him, and he looks after me too. He’s the only one I want.” Fans of The Finish Line can expect plenty of changes this season. The second series saw the track extend, making for even more nail-biting finishes, and now, Sarah has teased a brand-new twist: the supercharged end zone. “You haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen our supercharged end zone,” she says, “It almost sets the studio alight as people are getting towards the finish line. Roman also gets through more questions on this series than the last two put together!” That’s no small feat. The BBC show has gained a reputation for its relentless pace, and with contestants answering back-to-back questions in a matter of seconds, the margin for error is razor-thin. Roman loves the thrill of watching players push themselves to the limit - but he admits he takes some guilty pleasure in their mistakes. “You’re going to see a lot of people fail this season,” he says. “And there’s a sick part of me that quite enjoys seeing people set on victory and not make it.” Sarah, on the other hand, is all about the underdogs. “It’s very compelling for viewers to see someone who comes in a little more unsure of themselves,” she says. “They might confess to being nervous, but then they shine because the questions have gone in their direction. That’s purely random.” And it’s not just about winning - it’s about why people play. This season, Roman was particularly moved by one contestant’s story. “He came on wanting to win money for his dad. He didn’t think his dad would be around for much longer, and he wanted to take him to see a Six Nations rugby match and travel, do things only money can buy,” he says. “I won’t give it away if he did it or not, but you can’t help but root for someone like that.” Other contestants had more unusual motivations. “One player wanted to buy a goat because they couldn’t afford a lawnmower,” Sarah says. Another planned to use the cash prize to bury the money and start their own treasure hunt in Edinburgh. “Someone made a game out of our game,” Roman says. Like this story?
