The Last of Us Season 2 Delivers Emotional Blow With Major Character's Death; Find Out
@Source: news18.com
The second episode of The Last of Us Season 2, which is titled Through the Valley, delivered one of the most heartbreaking and brutal moments of the series so far. Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel Miller, is killed in a shocking and emotional scene that fans of the game were expecting, but TV-only viewers might not have seen coming so soon.
Here’s how Joel’s death unfolds in the show and how it differs from the game.
The episode picks up right after the events of the season premiere. There is tension in Jackson after Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) kiss during a dance. But such small matters become irrelevant when a bigger threat looms outside. A storm is approaching, and with it, danger that none of them are fully prepared for.
When Joel and Dina lose contact, Ellie and Jesse (Young Mazino) set out to find them as they are worried something might have gone wrong. At the same time, a woman named Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) is also out in the wild. We met her in episode one. Years ago, Joel killed Abby’s father, who was a doctor working with the Fireflies. He was the one who was supposed to operate on Ellie to try and create a cure for the infection that jump-started the apocalypse. But the operation would have killed her. So, Joel stopped it by killing everyone involved and taking Ellie away. Abby never forgot what happened.
Now, she has come to find him. Abby leads Joel and Dina to a lodge after he saves her from a swarm of infected. He doesn’t realise who she is. Once they are inside, Abby’s plan begins.
Her group captures Joel and Dina. They drug Dina and hold Ellie back when she arrives. Abby then makes Joel admit what he did in Salt Lake City. When he does, she shoots him in the leg. Then she beats him with a golf club. The entire scene is brutal. It ends with Abby killing Joel in front of Ellie’s eyes.
For viewers who played The Last of Us Part II, the moment isn’t unexpected. Joel’s death happens early in the game, too. But the show makes a few changes. In the game, Joel is with his brother Tommy (played by Gabriel Luna in the series) when they rescue Abby. In the show, he is with Dina. This shift also makes room for another major change, which is the zombie attack on Jackson.
In the game, there is no such attack. But in the show, Abby unintentionally unleashes a horde of infected on the city. Since Tommy isn’t with Joel when this happens, he stays behind and helps defend the city and its people.
He was just as focused on revenge as Ellie in the original story, but the series shows him taking a step back. On the other hand, Ellie looks more likely to take matters into her own hands.
While his character may have died, Pedro might not be completely gone from the series. Just like in the game, Joel could still return in flashbacks, especially since there are parts of his story that haven’t been fully explained. The show hasn’t revealed what exactly caused the rift between Joel and Ellie.
