The PLAYERS: Collin Morikawa Calls for Slow Play Penalties, 'Fines Are Useless'
@Source: newsweek.com
Collin Morikawa has been one of the most vocal players on the pace of play issue in professional golf, particularly on the PGA Tour. The two-time major winner believes that the issue needs to be tackled head-on in order to solve it once and for all.His feelings were on full display during the pre-tournament press conference at The PLAYERS Championship. Speaking from TPC Sawgrass, he endorsed something that has been talked about in the golf media for some time now: the publication of the players who most affect the pace of play on the circuit."I think it should be released," Morikawa said. "I don't know why you wouldn't want it to be released."But the 6-time PGA Tour winner has a lot more on his mind when it comes to tackling slow play. Morikawa said the PGA Tour should take much more drastic measures."I think after talking to some guys, I think you just have to start stroking guys and giving guys actual penalties, whether it be strokes or FedEx Cup," he told the media. "What I've learned is that monetary fines are useless. We make so much money, and some guys frankly could care less about."Morikawa expanded on his reasoning by saying that what most players are really concerned about is qualifying for the playoffs.Those who qualify for the second event of the postseason by finishing in the top 50 in the FedEx Cup, stand to play in all of the Signature Events the following year."I don't know how much the fines are," Morikawa added, "but whatever X amount they are, and I think they care more about playing good golf and making sure they make the playoffs and making sure they make, you know, 70, 50, 30. That's where it hits hard."However, the 28-year-old did not fail to recognize that publishing the names of those who most influence the pace of play could also help solve the problem."I think what is there to hide, right? If you're slow, you know you're slow. I mean, if you don't know, then there's an issue. To me, there's no issue with letting it out, right. It's only going to make things better because then you're either going to have a target on you, put a little more pressure and hopefully you pick it up, or you get penalized."Collin Morikawa has made similar comments on several occasions. At the Genesis Invitational, he advocated that the PGA Tour adopt a policy similar to the one recently announced by the LPGA Tour.The measures adopted by the women's tour include penalty strokes and fines for players who exceed the times set by the policy itself.More Golf: Tiger Woods', Rory McIlroy's TGL Growth Talks Heat Up Amid Law Firm Hiring
