The PLAYERS: Rory McIlroy 'Not Out Of It,' Despite Failing to Adjust
@Source: newsweek.com
As the rest of the field, Rory McIlroy struggled with strong winds at TPC Sawgrass on Saturday. The result was a round over par and a drop of one place on the PLAYERS Championship leaderboard.However, the Northern Irishman was still in the top 5 and just four shots off the lead, so he believes he is still in with a chance of winning the title.Speaking after his third round performance, McIlroy said his game felt better than what the score shows and identified the points he felt made the biggest difference to the result."I feel like I played better than I scored," McIlroy said. "All the bogeys I made were really soft... They slowed the greens down today for obvious reasons, and I feel like I didn't adjust very well to that. Then some of the chip shots around the greens, when you start to get downwind, I got a little tentative with some of those, as well.""Not out of it by any means", he added. "The wind is supposed to still be blowing tomorrow, so yeah, it was nice to birdie that just to get one closer to J.J. on the last."The 35-year-old also revealed where his main focus will be for the final round of The PLAYERS Championship, with strong winds forecast to continue on Sunday:"I felt like I played well tee to green, controlled my flight well and hit the shots I wanted to hit. As I said, I just made a few too many mistakes around the greens and on the greens. If I can tidy that up tomorrow, I feel like I'll have a really good chance."Rory McIlroy had three birdies and four bogeys in the third round of The PLAYERS Championship. His 54-hole score is 8-under and he is tied for 5th place, four shots behind leader J.J. Spaun.The stats clearly show the effects of the inclement weather on the 4-time major winner's game. He hit just five of 14 fairways, and although his approach shots were much better, he could only reach 10 of 18 greens in regulation. He also needed 28 putts to complete the round (1.56 putts per hole), including a 3-putt on the 5th hole.However, McIlroy only sent one ball into the water and still managed to save par.It happened on the 587-yard, par-5 9th. The Northern Irishman wet his tee shot and, after the penalty stroke, found the left bunker with his third shot. He got out with a top-notch wedge job and then didn't miss the four-foot putt for par.More Golf: PXG's Jake Knapp Passing Golf's 'True Test' at The PLAYERS Championship
