The story behind the two Welsh Lions fans you keep seeing on TV
@Source: walesonline.co.uk
Deep within Marvel Stadium last Tuesday, Jac Morgan admitted he hadn't seen pictures of the two Welsh fans, dressed in full-on lions outfits - complete with face paint and the names 'Jac' and 'Tomos' plastered across their chests. He might have been the only one not to, with pictures of the two costumed supporters being shared far and wide. But, on Saturday night in the Melbourne Cricket Ground, as the Lions celebrated a famous comeback win against the Wallabies to seal a series victory, Morgan suddenly knew who these two fellow lions were. As the Wales captain let a host of emotions sink in - from relief over that crucial clearout not being penalised to sheer joy over a first Lions cap and victory - he spotted the two men pitchside and headed over. Embracing both of them, he posed for selfies before heading back to the celebrations. For the two men in the lions costumes, it capped what has been a wild week or so. Richard Marshall and Brian Patterson from Cardiff are the alter-egos of these face-painted lions, with Richard carrying Morgan's name on his chest and Brian keeping the injured Tomos Williams close to his heart. A couple of tears have been added to the costume, after the scrum-half was ruled out of the tour at the end of June. "We did it just because it's been a fun thing to do," Brian tells WalesOnline. "We wanted to support our two Welsh stars. "Welsh rugby is in the doldrums at the moment for a number of reasons. So we wanted to support Jac and Tomos. "Unfortunately, Tomos got injured - hence the tears. But Jac winning his Test cap will give Wales a big boost." Richard and Brian know each other from their playing days. Richard played for Rhiwbina, while Brian turned out for Glamorgan Wanderers. "We've played rugby all our lives," says Richard. "We know the community feel to it and the friendships we've made. "So coming over here to support the Lions with fantastic fans, the Australians have been brilliant too. Their hospitality has been second to none. "Everyone speaks to us and has a laugh. It's been the trip of a lifetime." This isn't the first time they've dressed up for rugby, but it's fair to say they've never made quite this big an impression. "It's been crazy," says Richard. "We've had messages asking if it was us, then saying we've been on the telly and on websites. "There were photographers on the pitch asking us to move closer so they could get our photo. It's great, it's all for the cause of rugby and camaraderie." On occasion, it has taken 10 minutes to just leave the hotel lobby - given the amount of people who want photos with the pair. "Rugby is a family thing," adds Brian. "Wherever you go, the spirit of the game, the toughness, the competition is all there. "But you've got to have a bit of fun. So that the lion costume, a bit of facepaint, got the names on there. "There's only two Welsh players so that was another thing. We're supporting them as well as the four home nations." The pair have been out here since July 7, having been planning this trip for over a year. Brian's quick to stress the outfits are worn only on the day of the Tests, with the pair having got the act of painting each other's faces down to a fine art. It now only takes around 20 minutes to be match-ready in terms of applying the whiskers. Before the match, Brian joked that Richard would have to "invade the pitch" when Morgan got on for his first Lions cap - a step or two further than sticking a couple of tears on your chest. "I'll be taking those tears and they'll be coming out of here," admits Richard, pointing to his eyes. In the end, there was no need to invade the pitch, with Morgan coming to them. Afterwards, Richard described the surreal moment as "amazing". "It's a massive one for him and Welsh rugby as a whole," adds Richard. "He's a cracking player and a lovely lad." What a sight to behold in the end. Wales' last remaining Lion finding two more, slightly different, Welsh lions in a sea of red.
