A spacious 600-acre park boasting a Grade I-listed country house has been named one of the best green spaces in the country - and it’s about to embark on a historic summer . Price comparison service idealo recently unveiled its top ten most popular green spaces in the UK, rated on park ratings, monthly searches and the number of posts shared on social media, as the weather continues to be nice ahead of the May school holiday. At the top of the list, with an overall rating of 4.7, was Richmond Park in London. Covering 2,500 acres, the green space is one of London's eight Royal Parks and home to a host of nature and wildlife, including deer, kestrels, and meadow butterflies. Perhaps unsurprisingly, London ruled the top three of the list with Hyde Park and Greenwich Park following closely behind Richmond Park. Sefton Park in Liverpool and Hampstead Heath in London rounded up the top five. But in sixth place was the only Greater Manchester representation in the form of Heaton Park . Located in Blackley, near Bury , the park received an impressive rating of 4.1, alongside 135,000 monthly searches on Google, 110,000 Instagram posts and 4,718 TikTok posts. First sold to the council 103 years ago by the 5th Earl of Wilton, Heaton Park has an abundance of features and activities onsite, including an 18-hole golf course, an adventure playground, ornamental gardens, bowling greens, and its own tram system. Hailed as one of the biggest parks in the North West, Heaton Park also has an animal farm, as well as a 12-acre boating lake and an abundance of woodlands and natural habitats to explore on a sunny day. Each year, thousands flock to the park for a host of music festivals and gigs - notably Parklife which takes place in June and attracts around 80,000 attendees over its two-day weekend. Alongside the festival taking place on June 14 and 15 this year, Catfish and the Bottlemen will perform a day before the event on June 13. Of course, Oasis will also be heading to Heaton Park in July for four homecoming shows on their reunion tour. They last played at the park in June 2009 to crowds of 210,000 people across three nights. The 2025 shows will be taking place between July 11 and 20. Weeks later, the Heaton Park Food Festival will also take place. Running from August 2-3, the festival will feature celebrity chefs, food stalls, and plenty of live entertainment and family-friendly activities. Another highlight of Heaton Park is the stunning 18th-century country house Heaton Hall. Remodelled in 1772, the hall has previously been named "the finest house of its period in Lancashire”. The hall’s Cupola room features 1770s-style Pompeiian decor alongside mirrored walls and a domed ceiling. It is believed to now be one of only three such rooms left in Britain today. Nowadays, the hall is only open on an occasional basis throughout the year for museum tours and events where around 13 rooms are available to visit as part of guided visits. In the First World War, Heaton Park was used as a training camp for the Manchester Pals infantry battalions, whilst the Hall also served as a military hospital. During the Second World War, the park became a camp for the Royal Air Force where more than 133,000 aircrew were trained up for service. 43 years ago, the park was also the location for a Mass celebration from Pope John Paul II where 12 priests were ordained in front of a crowd of more than 100,000 people. The 1982 religious event is remembered with a papal monument in the park. Heaton Park has Grade II-listed historical status by the English Heritage Register of Parks, with a total of nine structures within the park also possessing listed status, including the Collandade which originally formed the entrance to the old town hall on King Street and was moved to the park in 1912.
