The terrace house turned pub in Oldham that's just won another three accolades

When Chris and Michelle Riley decided to transform a derelict terraced house in Oldham into a community-led pub in the midst of the pandemic, many might have initially doubted their plans. But five years later, the pub has a number of national and local accolades to its name - and it’s just added a further three more to its bustling list of achievements. Fox and Pine, on Greaves Street in Oldham, has just been named the Rochdale , Oldham and Bury CAMRA Pub of the Year for 2025, winning the title for a fourth consecutive year. If that wasn't enough, it was also named the Cider Pub of the Year and the Town Pub of the Year within the local CAMRA branch too. Known for its quirky aesthetic, the pub’s walls are adorned with a wealth of unique memorabilia like puppets, pots, signs, and, naturally, a large number of fox toys. But the venue has also garnered a strong reputation for its community efforts. Chris and Michelle, who also run the Cob and Coal bar in Tommyfield Market Hall and recently took over Crompton and Royton Golf Club's bar and restaurant , regularly host fundraisers, luncheons and charity events. “We have been in the industry for a long time so we know it is important to have that rapport with your customer and the area you’re in,” Chris previously told the Manchester Evening News . “We do a lot with local charities and organisations, we arrange coach trips to local matches, we are a shirt sponsor for Oldham RLFC and we host coffee mornings for former Rugby League players.” The pub, which takes its name from representation of his wife’s Leicester roots (the fox representing Leicester City) and his love for Oldham Athletic (their original name being Pine Villa), also serves up homemade food three times a week - all made by Michelle - including scotch eggs and sausage rolls. Known as a ‘real ale lover’s delight’, the pub has ten ales on tap all representing a mixture of local, independent and popular names handpicked by Chris, including Southern Cross by the Pictish Brewing Company and Brew York's Tonkoko milk stout. Speaking about the recent trio of wins from CAMRA for Fox and Pine, Chris said: “Thanks to everyone that actually believed that a terraced house in Oldham town centre could be a pub and not only a pub, a community hub for so many people. “Oldham has the best live music venues, best soul nights, the best open mic nights. It really is the place to be. Our staff are amazing.” Locals also took to social media to share their congratulations for the recent awards. One person posted: "Well deserved, love the place." Another said: "Congratulations and a belting Pub, with nice staff and a friendly atmosphere and clientele." Another responded: "Amazing well done. You are going to have to start a new wall to show them all off." Mike Robinson, vice chairman of Rochdale, Oldham and Bury CAMRA, has said there is also now an ‘Ale Hop’ event planned for Oldham this summer - with Fox and Pine lined up to take part. Currently in the works from town centre pubs, bars and clubs, the trail is hoping to take place on the first weekend of August.
