Third Win for Saint Lucia in Regional Netball

Saint Lucia moved into sole possession of third place at the Jean Pierre Caribbean Youth Netball Tournament on Friday night, with a come-from-behind win over sub-regional nemesis, Grenada. Saint Lucia won 32-22 at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium in Barbados. Goal shooter Hailey Thomas took her tally to 26-30 for the competition, a chart-topping efficiency of 86.67 per cent. Saint Lucia captain Naija Ferdinand is now 75-90, a 73.68 per cent completion rate, ninth overall. On the night, subbing in for Clarise Netrvais, Thomas was 18-22 for the game and 11-13 going into the final frame. Ferdinand had one of her poorer shooting nights, making 12-18. Overall, though, Saint Lucia took 44 shots to just 30 for their opponents. That was a significant reversal from the opening quarter, when Grenada led 10-4. Saint Lucia head coach Shem Maxwell sent her charges back on the court with a big deficit to overcome, and they did so swiftly. Grenada was 10-13 in the first quarter and Saint Lucia 4-7. Saint Lucia went into the halftime break up 16-14, thanks to a 12-14 quarter, whilst holding the Spice Girls to just five shots in the period. Saint Lucia got into their final game with a mathematical chance of sharing the top spot on the table on points. Doing so would require upsetting Trinidad & Tobago, victors on Friday night over two-time defending champions Barbados. The Trinbagonians shocked the hosts with a 39-22 win that now puts the Soca Princesses in pole position to lift the title if they can overcome Saint Lucia on Saturday night.
