June 21, 1975 Keene’s Central Square was the focus of much attention this week, with a church requesting to conduct “public lectures with a public address system,” the donation of a live blue spruce tree to serve as a permanent Christmas tree, and questions on whether the square might actually belong to the United Church of Christ and not the “citizens at large.” SULLIVAN — Bryan Abbot, a former Keene resident who is now a member of the Professional Golf Association, broke the course record at the Ashuelot Ridge Golf Course in Sullivan when he shot a 6-under-par 66 during a visit here last week. Wednesday, June 21, 2000 Civil rights martyr Jonathan Daniels of Keene will be remembered on the CBS Evening News airing Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Ruby Sales, who Daniels saved as a civil rights worker in Alabama in 1965 when he pushed her aside and took a shotgun blast aimed at her, will be interviewed. A revised plan for a joint police-fire station and parking garage downtown was outlined Tuesday night. The building would face Mechanic Street between Washington and Court Streets, altogether avoiding a controversial proposal to build on the United Church of Christ’s Elsie Priest Memorial Park on Court Street.
