A moment from the world-famous Calaveras County frog jumping competition has taken the internet by storm, sparking an online debate on “animal abuse”. Once started as a small-town fair in a simpler era, the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee has now emerged as one of the most celebrated annual events in California. This four-day festival gets underway on the third weekend of May every year. The fair opens with a children’s parade, while visitors can also enjoy various food, carnival rides, live music and several goofy competitions.
In the widely viral clip posted on Instagram, a girl was seen making her best efforts to make a frog jump. “Rules: You have one minute to get the frog to jump. The frog must start completely on the pad. You cannot touch the frog once it leaves the pad. The distance is measured from the pad to the third leap; the longest distance wins,” read the caption.
The video opens with the kid placing a frog on the mark. She then starts screaming her heart out, supposedly to startle the animal. Every time the girl shells out a voice command, the frog responds with a leap and reaches a platform following the third jump.
Once the task is completed, the crowd cheers for the girl, appreciating her efforts. It, however, remains unknown if the kid could have beaten the world record. One who achieves the feat at the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee will take home a reward of 20,000 US dollars.

Frog jumping might be nothing but a fun activity for the people of Calaveras County. Some social media users did not take the tradition lightly. After watching the video, a viewer simply called it “animal abuse.” “How is this legal?” added another. Can’t wait to see when the aliens will do this with us,” quipped a person.
A concerned viewer asked, “Does this hurt the frogs?” A sarcastic individual suggested that frog jumping as a sport “should be a part of the Olympics”. “Humanity never fails to disappoint me,” signed a user. “You call this culture?” read a remark.
Despite the negative reactions, the video has already amassed more than six million views on Instagram.
