The first American pope is going viral for his new look sporting a White Sox hat, which was actually a gift from a newlywed Haverhill couple — who are Red Sox fans.
“My phone’s blowing up that we’re all over the news now,” Kelly DeStefano told Boston.com. “I just wanted to make sure everyone at home knew that we did not turn on our team. It was all in joke and good fun.”
Kelly DeStefano and her husband, Gary, traveled to Rome for their honeymoon to attend the “sposi novelli” blessing, or a newlywed blessing given by the Pope. The couple, who are Roman Catholic, were married in Sacred Hearts Parish in Haverhill on May 25.
Kelly said they had their trip planned for months, and when Pope Francis passed away, they thought their chance to get a papal blessing was gone. But, the conclave quickly selected Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native.
“Going to the audience was a dream of ours,” Kelly said, adding “to have the first American pope, it was like a goal to get here.”
At their wedding, Kelly said, her cousin gifted the couple White Sox hats, and said the hats might draw the pope’s attention. But, the couple are actually long-time Red Sox fans. After an early morning waiting for tickets, they were able to secure an audience spot.
In a video of their encounter, Gary presents the hat to Pope Leo, who laughs.
“You’re going to get in trouble for this,” the pope says, after the couple says they’re from Boston.
“Don’t tell anyone in Massachusetts,” Kelly replies. Gary dons a White Sox hat before the Pope removes his zucchetto before doing the same. The crowd cheers as the couple pose for a photo with the church leader.
“He is so down to earth,” Kelly said. “I can’t believe how well spoken he is, and I heard him speaking in Spanish, Italian. He’s amazing.”
The photo of Pope Leo in the hat quickly went viral, with top sports pages sharing it on X. White Sox nation called him “the world’s most famous White Sox fan.”
But, that hat is now in the hands of Red Sox fans. Pope Leo blessed the hat and returned it to the couple, Kelly said. See the full the video of their encounter below.
