This Is The Only Tata Family Member Who Lives A Low-Profile Life In A 2BHK Now

The Tata family has built one of the most influential industrial empires in the country, revered across the globe. From steel to software, hotels to automobiles, the Tata Group’s vast network of companies is helmed by some of the nation’s sharpest minds. But while many of its members are boardroom regulars and fixtures on the social and business circuit, there remains one name in the family who has deliberately shunned the limelight.
Jimmy Tata, the younger brother of Ratan Tata, lives a life that stands in stark contrast to the high-stakes world of business his family inhabits. Now in his 80s, Jimmy resides quietly in a modest two-bedroom apartment on the sixth floor of Hampton Court in Colaba, Mumbai – a far cry from the opulence that his surname could easily afford him.
Born to Naval Tata and his first wife Sooni Commissariat, Jimmy and Ratan shared a close bond in childhood. Their father, Naval, later remarried Simone Tata, with whom he had another son, Noel Tata. While Ratan Tata went on to become the face of one of the most-respected business conglomerate, Jimmy made an entirely different choice.
He has never married, much like his elder brother, and is known to lead a life devoid of modern trappings. Reportedly, Jimmy does not even use a mobile phone. Instead, he prefers the company of books and newspapers, steering clear of social media and digital distractions. He is rarely seen in public and is said to meet very few people. His world, friends of the family suggest, is defined by tranquility and simplicity – values he has fiercely guarded over the decades.
Despite his reclusive nature, Jimmy Tata is by no means disconnected from the legacy of his family. He holds substantial shares in several Tata Group companies, including Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, and Indian Hotels. He also serves as a trustee of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, a role he assumed after his father’s passing in 1989.
Jimmy’s life drew rare public attention when industrialist Harsh Goenka, chairman of RPG Enterprises, posted about him on social media. Goenka praised Jimmy’s understated lifestyle, highlighting his residence in Colaba and recalling his prowess as a squash player in his youth, a talent his elder brother did not share.
The world caught another glimpse of the bond between the Tata brothers in a poignant Instagram post by Ratan Tata, shared on Jimmy’s birthday. It featured a black-and-white photo from 1945, with the simple caption: “Those were happy days. Nothing came between us”. The post was one of the few public acknowledgments of Jimmy’s presence in the family’s inner circle.
Jimmy Tata has never sought a corporate title or boardroom power, though his lineage could have granted him both. His story is not one of ambition unrealised, but of ambition redefined.
