'Those Who Doubted Shubman Gill, Lack Knowledge Of...': Gautam Gambhir Blasts Critics

BCCI’s move to hand Test captaincy to Shubman Gill wasn’t met with universal acceptance. The 25-year-old was supposed to replace someone like Rohit Sharma and tasked to manage a team in the absence of someone like Virat Kohli. Amid doubts, Gill kicked off his captaincy career on a high, individually, scoring 3 centuries in 2 Tests – losing the first before winning the next. After scoring above 600 runs in just 2 matches, he seemed to have lost his rhythm in the Lord’s Test. Gill scored 16 and 6 in the third Test and then got out for 12 in the first innings of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. But just when it appeared that one was seen the best of Gill on the tour, he roared back with another terrific knock to become the first Indian batter to score a hundred at Old Trafford since 1990. Addressing the media after the draw, head coach Gautam Gambhir slammed the critics and said the team never doubted Gill. “Nobody [in the Indian team] ever doubted Shubman Gill’s talent. Those who did, they just know to talk cricket but lack understanding of the game. Some people take time to blossom in international cricket. And no one in the dressing room is surprised by what he has done. And had he not done anything extraordinary, no one would have doubted him even then,” Gambhir said in the presser. Gambhir further said that the people who have doubts about Gill lack knowledge of cricket. “People who understand cricket, they know what kind of player Gill is, and he is living up to his expectations. And people speak of captaincy pressure, you can’t see anything of that sort. When he goes out to bat, he goes out as a batter and not as a captain,” he added. India secured a thrilling draw at Old Trafford as Ravindra Jadeja (107*) and Washington Sundar (101*) batted through two sessions. After trailing by 311 runs, India fought back through Gill (103) and Rahul (90). Their resistance has kept India’s hopes of ending the series on a high, setting up a mouth-watering finale at The Oval.
