Three Bruins among the first players named to 2026 Winter Olympic rosters

Bruins fans will be able to watch some of Boston’s top players on the international stage next February. The 12 countries qualified for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina announced the first six players on their respective rosters on Monday — with Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy set to represent Team USA for the first time on the Olympic stage. Both David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha were also among the first six players named to Czechia’s Olympic team. McAvoy — who served as an alternate captain for Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament in February — joins a U.S. roster that also includes North Chelsmford’s Jack Eichel, Auston Matthews, Matthew Tkachuk, Brady Tkachuk, and Quinn Hughes. Other players joining Pastrnak and Zacha on Czechia’s preliminary roster include Martin Necas, Radko Gudas, Lukas Dostal, and Ondrej Palat. Pastrnak has represented Czechia in six World Championships, helping his country win gold in 2024 while leading all players in scoring during the 2025 tournament with 15 points over eight games. Speaking in February 2024, Pastrnak shared his frustration over not being able to participate in the 4 Nations Face-Off. “It’s a huge disappointment,” Pastrnak said at the time. “I don’t know much I can say. Definitely not happy about it. I understand that it’s a quick turnaround. It’s next year. They probably didn’t have much time to make it a bigger tournament. “But Czech isn’t there. So it’s always a lot of players left out, so I’m not gonna watch the tournament, to be honest. So just happy that the Olympics got accepted. Yeah, [it] definitely stings a little bit.” McAvoy will be looking for some redemption in his first Olympics, as the Bruins D-man suffered a shoulder injury and subsequent infection during the 4 Nations Face-Off that forced him to be admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital. He did not return to game action for the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to his injury. Even with that setback, McAvoy admitted during the team’s break-up day that he would have no concerns over playing for Team USA moving forward — especially during the Olympics. “That is my dream of dreams, to play in an Olympics,” McAvoy said. “Every part of that 4 Nations was a dream come true. There’s a reason why I played that [Canada] game, because I’m not missing the game that I’ve dreamt of my whole life — it’s the aftermath of that, that cost me my year. “There’s a lot of … I don’t want to say regret … but an acceptance of what happened,” McAvoy said. “And it sucks that I am still coming to grips with it. But I wouldn’t trade it, the experiences, the friendships. I mean, that’s what you dream of, and I’ve dreamt of that on a broader scale of being in the Olympics.” McAvoy, Pastrnak, and Zacha likely won’t be the only Bruins in the running for Olympic reps. Jeremy Swayman could be in the running to earn a spot on Team USA — especially after helping the Americans win gold at Worlds last month. Elias Lindholm and Hampus Lindholm will likely be considered for Team Sweden, as will Joonas Korpisalo for Team Finland. Bruins prospect Dans Locmelis should also be a fit for Team Latvia after the UMass product represented his country at several international tournaments. The preliminary games for the men’s ice hockey tournament in Milan will start Feb. 11 — with the gold medal game slated for Feb. 22.
